WE OFFICALLY OWN CLASSICS, NOW, GM KILLS US!
I saw the offical word, today, on CNN. The Camaro/Firebird line will cease production at the end of the 2002 model year run.
Buy your New classics now, cause they go up in price, once they hit the Want ads!
ME?
I'd order the Indy Pace Car CONVERTIBLE version of the 2002 Camaro. The Camaro, is performance done, from the factory.
And a V-6 Firebird Convertible, Automatic, for cruising. I'd add exhaust & air intake to the Firebird and call it done!

LOL I wouldn't put my chips on it just yet, and as far as fourth gens go, they will be far from collectables any time in the next 10 years... What happens if they do come back in 2005 like the rumors suggest?
What is the actual guideline for classic cars? Is it 20 years from the production date, something like that? Or something more sneaky?
Where have all the flowers gone?

dang it, guess i got awhile, i have a 91 guess i still have almost ten years. I heard they were just stoping production for awhile(how long i dont know) and then totally redesinging the camaro and putting it in the same plant where the monte carlo is made, dont quote me on that i cant remember what plant i heard it was.
You can bet your *** if they redesign it the car will not be RWD. It'll probably be a juiced up version of a Mazda Miata.
By the time most thirdgen or 4th gen cars get to be classic cars worth any sort of decent money, gas will have been long gone, or will be $20/gallon...
IMO a thirdgen is a classic car already. Consider it one of the last original pony cars GM put out. After 3rdgens, GM basically started making every one of they're cars look the same, and the same as the crap everyone else produces.
Enjoy them while they last...

my 2.5 theories:
1.they will bring back the twins in bad form like the previous rehash es of the LeMans & Monza, econo boxes & fwd.
2.they are just going to move the the plant to mexico & save on labor
2.5 The bastards just bring back the camaro
Inconclusion: Rustang owners still laugh at GM & us.

Well, ford did the same thing to the mustang back in '93 and it came back... I bet it will be like that if the F-body returns. I think that they will put in a smaller V8 with the same power. As for FWD I doubt it, companies still understand that real sports cars have RWD. The miata has RWD not FWD just like the mustang, I don't think they will take it away.
Edit: I hear that Mazda is bringing back the Rx7... it's just a rumor so far, but watch out cause I bet it'll be making 300 Hp this time around. We may be facing a formidable opponent in the future.

Rx7 coming back? I doubt it. It was a GREAT car but the rotary had its ups and DOWNS. rebuilding the engines every 60k miles didn't settle well with the public. And The whole cant over heat thing they didn't like either. Pretty much ignorant people were scared of the rotary. Why? Because it was new to them and they didn't know how to take care of it. And the price tag wasn't a "WELCOME" floor mat by any means. $40k for a 255hp car? Thanks but no thanks.
When I used the statement, "Classics", I should have said "Modern Day Classics".
But any 3rd Gen is worth its cost. They are so under valued, it's GREAT!
Any time a car ceases production, the entire car name line becomes a classis.
How well in the hearts of the "Public" will it truly be a classic (like my 1967 & 68 Camaros & 1974 Corvette) well, that's acompletly different matter.
BUT, onto the FUTURE.
THEY SAY.......
Only the Camaro comes back, not the Firebird.
MAY BE in about 3 years, time. GM Does have several rear wheel platforms to choose from, to make the new Camaro. IT is said to be REAR Wheel drive, THE ONLY MARKETABLE CHOICE.
Write to GM, include a pic of your car and tell them to DO SOMETHING! After I settle down, I'm donating blood & writing my letter to GM.
Still moving! Damn got alot of "stuff"

If Mazda brings back a rotary engine sports car, it will be called the RX-8. I've seen pics of the concept car, it looks really nice. They've done the intake/exhaust ports differently so it looks like the engines will last longer.
It looks like Pontiac might bring back the Fiero... I saw this link on the Cascade Crew board:

Alex,
I saw that in Motor Trend too. As of right now, Pontiac has given us dealers no insight...but with NO plans for a Firebird, we'd love to see this obviously.
And all Camaro fans can rest assured...sources within SLP tell me there IS something coming down the pipeline, and Motor Trend has stated there will be a new Camaro for '04 for '05 (more likely). AND IT WILL NOT BE FWD....I'll bet my 30th on it!!
And anyone who says the 3rd gen is the last real F body hasn't ever driven a 4th gen. I just sold an '02 black Firehawk earlier today...it has been at the dealer for SIX HOURS! And anyone who says that that car doesn't live up to F-body heritage, or that my '97 isn't a real Camaro, is very short-sighted. I park my '97 next to my '89, and both have a distinctly Camaro look.
I love third gens as much as anyone here...but long live the 4th gen....

I'll even let you have a jump on me.
BTW: there is no way GM would ever KILL the Camaro or Firebird. Remember there was no Corvette in 83'. Just keep that in the back of your scared minds. If you were GM what would you do? Can I say a $20,000 new SS!? HAHA, we wish. Doubt they are bright enough to lower prices.

Interesting point about the term "classic" though: it's been defined as a 20+ year old car, but what about the body style? Since the third generation went for 11 years, that means any F-body up to 90 (and debatably through 92, I don't think so because of the revisions) has a "classic" body, even if the technology under the hood is newer.

I dont think that the termination of a certain car makes the remainder of tehm classics.
You don't see too many people bragging about their "classic" 1986 Nova or 1976 Nova for that matter.

(sighs) I miss our '76 Nova... if only the body-to-frame mount area didn't rust away...
This might shock people, but, frankly, I don't care at all that GM's discontinued the f-bodies. I own mine already. If I want another one, I'll buy another one. I don't think I'll ever buy a "new" car. Give me something used that I can work on and not worry about any damn warranty.
That thing at CamaroZ28.com to "Save the F-body" was a joke. Everybody that wrote in said something like "I own 43 Firebirds, and I love the car, please don't stop production. I want to buy a new one soon." Okay, so GM already made their $$ off this guy for his 43 Firebirds... why would they care? They would care, though, that out of 200 people, the other 199 (thoughts censored) people are drooling over the biggest SUV possible.
Personally, I'm pissed off at the EPA, and NTSC. Obviouslly, the higher-up's at those offices drive SUV's. Why else would they not be regulating gas-guzzling SUV's that constantly roll over (idiot drivers) or completely demolish other cars (and their drivers) in accidents?
I remember hearing months ago how the government decided not to regulate the gas consumption of SUV's. It was for some lame f'ing reason, too... like, they're not passenger cars so they're not subject to the same tests, or, it'd take too much work- something stupid. Just our luck, eh? Because the next door neighbor's gotta improve his own inferiority complex by beating the Jones's with an even larger SUV, gasoline is getting used up faster than ever, and I'm going to wind up parking my baby because Earth will be out of fuel. F'ing great. They should charge SUV'ers a luxury tax on fuel, registration, and insurance. "Double the price" sounds damn good to me- unless it can be proven that you're actually USING the Super-Duper-3-MPG engine for something useful. And that something useful doesn't include taking the kids to soccer practice, or going grocery shopping, or towing a little canoe. I'm talking about hauling, towing large trailers, climbing mountains, construction, etc.
Then, with that double (double? Triple!) luxury tax, I can keep my car fueled, and the planet will be saved.

I'll tell ya this. i have hopes that they will bring the f-body back. id like my kids to have the option of buying the latest version of the "american icon" as they put it.
but on with the hopes:
GM has two things now that make me have hopes.
#1. is Bob Lutz (right?) - he was CEO (i believe) of Chrysler and was one of the ppl that ok'd the Dodge Viper cause he likes american muscle. he is now (or so ive heard) CEO of GM.
#2. i cant remember his name, but he is the designer that drew u the original concept of the PT Cruiser. his design wasnt bad. he wants to revisit the Corvette, Camaro, Impala and Malibu (he said so in a press interview) and find out what they can do to "Better" the cars basically. so im hoping that the cars come back better designed. i also know that Bob Lutz will NOT let the car be changed to FWD. cause he, as i said, likes american muscle and i really doubt that he would let it be turned into a FWD car.
anyway. for those of you that dont care, thats cool. its understandable. for those of you that hopes f-bodies come back, there is some more hopes for ya, for those of you that are saying they will turn it into a FWD car, well. i dont think they will. if they did that they wouldnt make money on it.
if you read those press releases (some of them like on yahoo business) there was a quote from an anyalist saying that Ford has sucesssfully transitioned the Mustang to the new market, and that the majority of Mustangs sold were v6's in the last two years, and were driven by women (nothing wrong with this). and that GM should shoot for that market, cause Ford obviously turned the mustang into a cute, desireable car. which is what people are looking for. im all for making it a little smaller maybe, but def. keep it RWD.
anyway, ive said too much already, laters.

I have a 91 Camaro and another classic a 68 FIREBIRD oh ya. The camaro is gonan come back a few months ago in CHP there was a small article that said Chevy is haveing problems with the NEW camaro the back window blows out becasue of wind pressure so im under the impression its conaa come back again. Other wise why would they be testing a camaro?
And Davids Camaro sure does look a lot cleaner than my 1985 Firebird.
I just got my old 1967 Camaro to my new home. Looks GREAT sitting next to the Wife's/Son's 1968 Camaro.
I do hope they bring it back the F Bodies!.
My 1985 Firebird is what is moving me, right now, until I borrow a pick up truck!
IF they do this new F5, Hopped up V-6 (Supercharged!! as an option!!) version & one V-8 model, Coupe and Convertible!
Solid rear axle & SLA front suspension.
OF COURSE REAR WHEEL DRIVE & let it share another platform, for like for an EL CAMINO!!!

I agree with Tom... I really don't care if they ditch the F-Body, I already have mine (thirdgens are the coolest anyhow).
Nameplates disappear & re appear all the time; VW did it with the Beetle (though it took 20yrs); Ford/Mercury did it with the Cougar & is doing it again with the T-Bird though now the last two are geared towards a diffrent group than the models they replaced.
There's still hope yet but lets hope that the company that gave us the Cavalier/Sunbird/Cimmaron/etc, in the early 80's,doesn't bring us the Camaro/Cavalier or TransAm/Sunfire :P

Anyone really hear anything about the Fiero coming back? If anyone has ever seen pics of the 89 Fiero proto you know why this is a good thing. As for the Fbody thing... GM is playing with fire.
Wish I still had my 92 Firebird.

</font>

I have HEARD (could be rumor) that they are replaceing the F-Body's with a redesigned GTO in 2005. Not to say this is a good thing, because I'm sure they would make the dang thing FWD, like they did when they brought the impala back
Anybody else heard of this?It is definatly a shame that they only American muscle car left will be the, *Gulp*, mustang.
