Not sure if this is the right place to put this but since V6 has different Carburetor might be.

I am trying to understand what the Charcoal Canister does. Have a Chilton manual but doesn't explain what it does. There are three hoses coming from the Carburetor area, two from the carb and one is from the PCV valve on the rocker cover. There is one hose off the fuel line which I suppose must be for the fuel vapors. There is also a solinoid I think on the inner fender near the canister. Has an electrical connector so guess is controlled by the ECM

What I am thinking is when the engine is started the Canister stores the fumes/vapors from the engine and when the engine heats up it releases them back into the carb to be re burned. Is the right or am I way off.

Thanks.

Here is a good site that helps to understand the way it works.

I have a question. Is there anyway to set the car up like an old school car. one in and one out of the can? my lines are all nasty and i would like to simplify it

Actually, it's 2 ins and one out... The small line coming from what should be the EGR valve area connects to the small ports on both the canister and the inline purge valve that's in the big hose between the can and the vapor line coming from the tank. The large line coming from the idle air pipe goes into the port under where the small hose connects to the canister. Then you leave the vapor hose (from the tank and inline valve) alone.

You will need to remove the restrictor with the 2 lines connected to it from the large hose and the purge valve.

Let me guess, your purge solenoid isn't working? I bypassed mine a while ago this way (actually, for a long time, the can just sat there and did nothing because NOTHING was connected to it).

You have the underhood sticker, right? Everything stays the same except you disconnect the lines from the solenoid and hook the medium sized hose straight to the canister's vacuum valve...

I dont have the hood sticker, and The PO has taken all the lines off ecept the tank line going straight to the center of the canister. I have two vac lines coming from the motor. One going to the TB doesnt suck air. and one going to the rear of the engine does. both of these are plugged. Also the egr has been removed. Which lines do i need to run to the canister? what does the vac lines on the tb do? is that just a clean air source?
