Hello all, first thanks in advance to all you generous guys and gals here that share all your priceless information, now my question is this, can I put a turbo charger on my V-6 2.8 87 camaro, has 70.000 mint miles on it, again thanks in advance

can u...yes
that's my end goal, is a 2.8L turbocharged, but the problem is that it'll be very difficult to do, and require much fabrication. Depending on your knowledge of automotive engineering and stuff, it'll be more or less difficult. There is a website where a guy put a turbo on a 2.8L fiero, and he later put one on a 3.4L fiero (at 10psi boost he was running 300hp). There's also a site where a guy turbocharged a 510, and that was twin turbod the problem is where to put the turbo for twins, also routing the pipes, custom headers would have to be developed. Then u have to run the lines to the oil pan and oil sending unit to lube the turbo, the chip would have to be replaced, but there is a company that used to manufacture them so you can find em. Also, u'd probably want to change the injectors, get a dial a boost system, and a ignition retard system to retard ignition with every 1psi of boost. Thats about all, if u think u can bite it off, attempt it, all u have to lose is money.

Welcome to the gang!
I may have a solution as far as exhaust routing, but probably caint be done with a lowered car. will follow up with more details....just wondering about speed bumps.
edit: finally have car in garage, will see about some pics w/pvc as soon as the exhaust is off.

$150.00 2.8 Auto.
Blown Head Gasket.
turbo has arrived
,
working on getting some 3.4 heads.

oh yeh...welcome to the boards, i think i forgot that part. Hey, get those pics of the exaust routing as soon as you can, so i can take em to my shop and see if they can build it.
not worried about ground clearence unless you hit on every nick in the road (missouri roads suck).

I hear you on those Missouri Roads, they're horrible-what part of St. Louis you from? (Sorry-I know this has absolutely nothing to do w/ the awesome V-6)

well i'm from Bridgeton (st. louis county) but am currently a resident of Warrensburg (Central Missouri State University) e-mail me if you want more info....

one interseting thing about my turbo, it has a 2" inlet & a 2.5" exhaust. must be that to keep up exhaust pressure. proboaly will end up using an ecm from a 3.1 turbo grand prix.
edit: FYI, I'm doing a low "experiment", camaro_hunter_d is working on a kit that should address all, or at least most, issues.
we might be done about the same time, just need to wait & see whose car blows up first

Yes the tubow is a turbine basically. The exhaust heat and kenetic energy ius harnessed to do work. There is no temperatur loss to speak of, but the whole I dea is the pressure drop. That is how it works to compress the energy. Um I think in a Enginerring field it would follow the first law of thermodynamics
I could go into it further, but I dont thin anyone wants to read as boring derivation of an equation to show how a Turbo works, but you are correct on the velocity idea, because the velocity has to do with pressure, but remember what goes in must come out.(conservation of mass)

Well Yes thermo tempurature is a big issue to concern. The hotter the intake air the less pressure it has and the less power it can make overall. Thats why any serious turbo goer uses an intercooler to get the intake charge WAY down to get more power. Yu need to have the exhaust side of the turbo covered in plenty of free flowing air to help cool it some. I do understand thermodynamics(Jet engine mech) and thereis alot to consider with turbos. You can get the Turbo BIN and place it in your factory comp and it should be just fine. At least thats what I am going to do.<font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">Originally posted by Kyle F:

I was speaking of only the exhaust side. The intake air is not affected as much as one would thin by the exhust temp. The heat build up in the intake sife is due to the air being compressed. That is why Supercharger also build a lot of heat. It is very vewry truwe that the cooler the air is the better off it will be, but the intercooler does not increase the density of the air that goes into the enige. The mass flow rate on both sides of the intercooer has to be the same and with it being under pressure the density does not increase, but th lower temperature alows for more boost without knock(spark retard is bad).
I am glad that those who are wanting to do the rurbo swap are not going in blind and understand somewhat about the whole Idea behind turbos, and not just they comress air and make more power by forcing it in.
You guys will be succesful I know it, I have lots of faith, but When is the only question.
Do you think wither of the two of you who are doing the Turbo 3.1 or 2.8 will be done by spring?

as I have said the faster I get pepes buying form me the sooner I can get on this. If you know any import guys, or you guys want anything I will cut the best deal that I possibly can. I go buy the general price of 30 bucks over my price. 20 for me and 10 for the drop ship fee. www.geocities.com/GenerationXRacing is the site... I have Eibach springs at 210 even I will cut the price 10 bucks... NOS systems, V6 specfic 1 inch drop springs...
