Does an exhaust leak rob power?

I've had one for about 2 years now...noticeable at cold start-up, goes away more as it gets warmer, but is always there. My uncle checked it when he checked the tranny and said 2 studs on the RH manifold are broken.

Could this cause a power loss??

well check my exaust out, my cat is gutted but it isn't connected correctly so it's really loose, when i put it in drive it starts shaking terribly and making my car sound so SH!TY it's unimaginable, it makes a "ting ting ting ting" noise but fast and loud, then my muffler is rusted and full of so many holes you can call it swiss cheese muffler, my tail pipes are so rusted if you were to grab them in your bare hands they would crumble...SERIOUSLY.. is htis robbing my car of power, if so how much?

byt he end of this month "within the next 2 weeks im due for my emissions test, so im getting:

1.power for performance cat "heard these are made by dynomax, and 2. my dynomax cat back exaust system.

i should have them hooked up and ready ready for action within 2-3 weeks, since my exaust is well pure ****, how much of a power gain will i get? and will i be able to actually feel it?

Jason, are the bolts snapped flush with the head, or flush with the manifold?

I've seen two heads with that problem. My spare "junkyard" set, and the set for my friend's 2.8 (that we swapped). Both bolts had been broken flush with the manifold. When the manifold was removed, the broken bolt was sticking out.

All I did was squirt some Liquid Wrench on them, and, without waiting/heating/tapping the bolt, I put vise-grips on it (super-tight). I then proceeeded to unscrew the bolt from the head with light hand pressure!! I thought my junkyard heads were a one-in-a-million with that operation until I worked on my friend's heads.

I think the broken head of the bolt is because the shoulder of the bolt rusts to the manifold... the mech then twists the head of the bolt off. I don't think the bolt rusts to the head.

So... this long post means if there's enough bolt sticking out of the head to grab with vise-grips, you probably don't need to remove your heads to drill out the broken bolt.

Tom,

You said "..you probably don't need to remove your heads to drill out the broken bolt."

Don't mean to sound ignorant here, but why would the heads need to be removed to fix 2 broken manifold studs??

This is exactly what my uncle said: "Its a common problem on 2.8s F bodies, the heads on the studs get ripped off, and you gotta really get in there to fix it..."

Obviously, I don't know what "in there" means, I just go with him Can you elaborate Tom? Is this gonna be a major PITA for him to do?? Its cool he only charges $25 an hour if it is

oh ell yes it can rob power. I hit a dip on a country road and busted a hole in the bottom of the y-pipe, alot of my power was lost. Just tonight I took it to the shop and had them weld a piece over the hole and now my power is back

(Busy with college crap)

It's just hard to get in there with a drill... there's a lot of stuff in the way. I'm sure someone can get there without pulling the head... maybe with a 90-degree adapter or something... are the studs snapped flush with the engine head or are they just missing the bolt head?

There is a bit you can buy for your drill called a "skew driver". They sell both a 90 degree and 45 degree skew drivers. This also comes in handy when you want to replace your front speakers and have to remove the dash pad sence it can use both drill bits and screw driver bits.
