Cold air intake

ok, If I just take out the air box but leave the hardware to the radiator, and put a cone air filer instead of the airbox will I get the cold air effect.
Also do I need the sensor or what, what will happen if I leave it off? I figure if I need it I could get a tiny peice of pcb and cut a hole in it and but it between the intake tube and air filter. And finally dont you need that stock hardware that connects to the radiator for the AC to work properly?

By what your telling me sounds like u have a firebire like mine.. Theres 2 sensors your mass air flow and your IAC that is in your airbox.. I recommend a custom Cold air intake and just rig the IAC sensor on the piping and hook the MAF sensor to it. Goto a hardware store and look at the piping. the swaure box behind your radiator doesnt really have a purpose I think it just robs air flow if I'm correct. Hope I could help.

Just put a piece of pipe in there and plug the sensor back in. It probably just robs air as 89 said, but ou never know what kinda Problems misplaced sensors will bring.

Maverick, what kind of car? What year? If your cone filter is above the radiator, or right off the throttle body, you won't get a cold air effect OR a ram-air effect. That look might be okay for TPI V8's, but even they lose performance with it.

If don't put the air sensor back in your computer will be compensating for conditions that are not happening and you will not see the full effect from this setup. As Tom said get that cone as far away from the engine as possible. This will also help.

Take the time to route the cone away and place the sensor. In the end you will be happier.

Ok, I'm sorry I got a 89 V6 Firebird, I took off the all the intake hardware, except the rubber piece connected on the engine. I'm probly going to make at least make a single inlet from a cone cold air filter using pcb or maybe some sort of metal piping. Ok, I relize there's the I larger piece with the larger wiring I think it says IAC or AC. Thne theres the smaller sensore that looks almost like a spark plug, I diconnected that sensor when I took out the air box. So I figure when I make my costume intake I will install in the piping. Should I connect the IAC tube in it too. I will probly just in case. Now for the second I idea, if I were to make a dual intake something like a "Y" type would just having those two sensors the IAC and smaller sensor on the one side work? And finally, Could the tubes be a "T" type route meaning two 90degree angles or would they have to be a "Y" type route?

your confusing your MAF and IAC. the IAC sensor is the sensor that screws into the OEM canister....the MAF is that larger plastic piece between the TB and air filter

for my car i removed the air sensor from the round filter cup thing... then i took off the botom and placed the k&n cylindar Shaped air cleaner directly onto the air box tray... i had to seal up a small hole... and i just have the top of the air box over the filter... today i got a piece of sheetmetal and i put it between the engine and the filter to keep all heat away from the filter... it works very well... i hope to soon find some kind of metal tubular pipe that can replace that plastic pipe...
check out my air box b4 i modded it... check the last picture to see the type of factory air box i had
