Hey everyone I'm new to the 3rd gen world, my boyfriend just got me a 90 3.1 on Friday to use as a daily driver. This is my 3rd Camaro in life. The first was my first car, a 76 with a 305 all orginal when I got it. The second I still own, a 78 with a built 350, roller cam and lifters, vortech heads, and a 795 cfm Rochester. This is the car that brought my boyfriend and I together 4 yrs ago. How often do you meet a woman that likes cars and is a die hard Chevy fan?

A question I have about the 90, is it common for these cars to have very little get up and go from a dead stop? And how do I fix that problem, short of dropping a V8 into her?

Welcome to the board, yes it's normal for these to be on the slow side. You can find pretty much all the info needed in the stickies at the top of the v6 board. My girlfriend is also a Chevy fan but favors 1st gen's she didn't like third gens when I met her but after test driving mine out she now wants one

I was the one that brought my boyfriend to the Camaro side. When I met him he was all about the trucks and Burbs. Then he drove my 78 everyday and decided he needed mire horse power. A friend sold him an 83 Z for cheap and he's been working on that think daily for a while to get it driveable, he's got about another weeks worth of work. He got me my 90 cause I needed a daily driver and I kinda refuse to have anything but a Chevy if I have my way.

 

Just skimmed the sticky and there's lots of good info therel I will have my boyfriend read it and we will decide what we can afford to do for now and figure out where we ultimately want to end up at. I know we are talking of having the tranny rebuilt this summer depending on our tax return.

 

Well its gonna come down to what do ya want with your newest camaro. Do you want to keep the V6 in it and just do a few bolt on mods, do ya wana put some cash in it and get a fast V6, do ya wana make it handle better...and so on. There alot of options out there, so youll have to decide which way to go. By the looks of what youve had before, im thinking you want a little speed??

This is the best place(website) to go for the V6 side of thirdgens by far!! I did alot of stuff to my lil 3.1L in the last 6 months and this web site made it alot easier since so many people on here have done extensive mods and research.

well it does have a 3.1 which will of course have a pretty bad acceleration. not as much torque as a 305/350.

 

Our main reason for getting the RS was to save it from the scrap yard. I like the fact that it'll be better on fuel than my 78 Camaro and I know it would be slower, but it seems slower than even my lifted diesel Suburban! I breed to have a little more pick up than what it currently has or I'll wanna stop driving real quickly and go back to driving my 78 everyday, lol. I'm not looking for a power house, but a little more would be nice. I think we'll start with a real good tune up with some nice parts and to redo the air intake and exhaust. That may be all I need for now to keep me happy. Once the tranny is rebuilt I should get even more get up and that'll should do the trick. I'll probably just have to drive my 78 every weekend to keep my need for speed happy, lol.

 

Thats cool that you saved the camaro from a JY. For the most part they do get good mpgs. Your on the right track by thinking you should tune the car up first and then go from there. I know the 3.1L is a slouch compared to other camaros, but mine in its stock form was zippy, granted that was only to like 45mph, but it still was fun to drive in town.

Also your camaro has a 3.23 rear end in it if its a auto and 3.42's if a stick. Add the short first gear in the 700R and you got great tq manipulation for a low power V6.

 

Thanks for that info. We haven't found the option sheet or build sheet yet, can't get into the truck till we have a key made, one thing at a time right now. Saving the car left us a little tighter for cash for the next 2 weeks than we planned for, but it's worth it. The car is an auto and as far as we know its all original.

 

Well if its an auto 3.1L then its the same as my car to the T. At least in the engine/tranny dept. If you ever need info on spects or whatnot, ive been colecting them for a while now and have pages and pages of info saved on everything from comp ratio, tranny gearing, to tuning BIN XDF, ADX files(which im still learning how to use)...

Like any other engine, the more air you can get in at a given RPM, then the more fuel you can burn to make more power at that RPM. The easiest way to give her a little more go from a dead stop would be a stall speed, cold air intake, headers and a tune. The hard way of course is heads, cam and intake...

I'd ditch the 3.23s out back as well.

 

I've already got a posi lined up with disk brakes. Just need to find out what the gearing is.

 

Awsome! Is it off a 4th gen f-body?? Remember that if it is, they have a wider rear end and youll either need spacers or dif. rims so your tires dont stick out another 1inch or so on each side.

 

IIRC we were told the rear end is from a 3rd Gen. Berlinetta...not sure on the year.
