large hose coming out of canister? It splits into a T.I took a engine out of a firebird and put it into a camaro.I moved the canister air breather took the stuff out of the battery tray. The camaro had a 305tbi in it before I started putting the 3.1 system in it.I moved everything.but cant figure out where the larger hoses go.The smog pump is not conected.looks like one line is supposed to go up over the fender.I put a bolt in it to plug it.ANY GUESS'S

I had it pluged off while trying to get the engine to run halfway right.I messed with the IAC valve and now cant get it to run at all.Plus I think my starter might have locked up on me.here it is anyhow

Re: Large hose coming out
Check the vacuum hose routing diagram on the hood. Or do what I did and ommit the unnecesary vacuum lines, though that requires that you 1. don't need to pass emissions, and 2. know what they all do, without knowing what exactly you swapped, and or seeing the car I can't really say what that particular vacuum hose is for.
But, if I had to guess, it might go to the metal line coming out of the fuel tank and going to the evap can.

that end of the hose your holding goes into the fender area, nothing hooks to it. Its the purge line that just purges excess gas fumes into the fender area.

So that hose is fine just jam it back down into the fender area

From what I see, that would be a vacuum leak...

First, replace the hoses. Your hands are black because the hoses are deteriorating, not because they're (the lines) dirty. Then, run a single length of hose between the canister and engine, wherever it connects to on the other end. There is NO hose in that area that runs to open space. Well, actually, there is NO HOSE PERIOD that runs to open space, unless emissions parts have been deleted, and that hose would be the one on the metal line coming from the fuel tank.

I know that some of the later models have a line running to the can from the AIR pump, but it's a single line that's not joined to anything else. There are molded labels on the top of the can... It should tell you where the line comes from.

Well my 3.1L has the same set up, one into the canister (t-ed off to the other) that other goes into the fender well, that is a purge from the excess pressure from the gas tank, thats all that is. Its not vacuum a leak at all. Mabey 2.8l's dont have that but mine does and its been that way since 2002 and ive never seen a 3.1L look any different.IIRC my cas cap does not vent, so this is the venting system of exspanding gas vapor for my 1991 3.1L.

Um, no. The only pressure purge valve for the fuel vapor system is by the left rear wheel (controls fuel tank pressure). The check valve is in the vapor line leading TO the canister. The place where the lines connect to is a simple T, not a check valve. And yes, the car I'm referring to is a 91 with the 3.1, automatic, and no A/C (from the factory), that I pulled the entire front end wiring harness, wiper motor, and canister from (before I cut the driver's rear quarter off). I'll look in my 92 FSM in the garage tomorrow, but I'm 99% certain that leaving the line open is a vacuum leak and problems waiting to happen.

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/v6/1...2-v6-auto.html Check this thread out exspecially the CCP purge lines. Heres some of it.. its lables 5a under RBobs post
5A) The one labeled AIR has a line on it that goes straight to the fender. There is a T with two pieces of line, one goes up under the fender, other goes down to a clamp on bottom of fender. Both are open ended. (This whole thing is inside of the fender).

Re: Large hose coming out
The one labeled AIR connects to the air pump (why else would they label it as such?). I know. I disconnected it from there when I pulled the canister on the 91. I had the canister hooked up to my car without it. The canister didn't work right without it, and sounded like it was going to be sucked inward, like a crushing can (or a plugged up vacuum cleaner). And that was leaving the AIR port completely open, with no hose on it, running to the fender.

Re: Large hose coming out
hu.. well mine not like that so i guess i stand corrected, ive never had any problems. The one labed air on mine looks in the same spot, one goes into the fender twards the rear of the car and the short one just is clamped in on a plastic clip

mines routed just like that link down to the t- except i have gotten rid of that 5lbs waste of space air pump!

Re: Large hose coming out
there is a line coming out that runs to the metal line that is much smaller. It runs to the tank as you say.the firebird crosses over from drivers side to passanger side through tranny tunel.the camaro comes straight up the drivers side.I joined them together with a line running accross the powerstering line at the bottom of the radiator.seams to me the short hose didnt go to anything.the longer one is what I now gota figure out.do I plug them or what?I have no open vac lines on the engine.the smog pump is on the car.but it's not functional. It just searves as a belt pully.MOSTLY.I've about decided that sence the engine ran fine in the firebird and the compleat system short of the gas lines and fuel tank were moved with the engine and tranny,I mean everything, radiator harness ecm driveshaft hoses and so on.I put seafoam in it with 6gal.fresh gas.But the thing stinks like ****.So I'm going to swap tanks, new filter and lines. The firebird lines are like new.I think that will fix it.

Re: Large hose coming out
went out to look.starting to rain here.55 and rain!anyway, the camaro was a stock 305 tbi.I put a 3.1 system out of a firebird into this camaro body because it needed a home. The air pump you talk about,is that the setup on the passanger side down on the bottom?I cant think of anything else it could be.this car has no black ball on the drivers side.if it's real important I still got the FB body and the fender is off so the ball is easy to get to.the hoses that run to it are just conected together or pluged.looks like the smog pump or air pump is for the most part hooked up and working. We dont have emitions testing here YET!

Re: Large hose coming out
That's exactly the way the canister on my 3.1 looks. Why there is a T on it is beyond me, but both open ends are in the fender. The 3.1 emissions diagram (though it isn't named so) I go a hold of doesn't show a connection to that port at all.

that T is just where its labled vent in this diagram, im not sure why its there either but my car has it too, just to route the extra fumes away from the engine bay??
