But if you decide to do it, its not to bad to accomplish.
The tear down is important. LABLE EVERY wire, vac line, and TAKE pictures as that will save your butt when you put it back together.
Keep in mind that If you do this you might as well change out some things that are good mantenence. Such as Timing chain, dizzy o-ring, valve seals. These items are not that exspencive.
I spent personally
$118 on the delta cam and lifters
$30 on the new valve springs
$10 on the new valve seals
$25 on head gaskets
$30 on carbine bits to use on a dremmel for the porting
$30 on other gaskets
$50 on a new timing chain/gear set
Thats not too much $ really with the gain I saw. Let me remind you what this combination did again on my car for 0-60 times. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vtMKAf_Bh6o Go video tape your car then watch this and see how much faster it is then stock which is from the high 9 second area to the low 10 second area. Im safe to say it was making a 0-60Mph in 8 seconds in that video if not a little less(7.5 seconds I really think).
And wow did it sound good once I broke that cam in.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kj-BaobBxF4
I linked my thread on your other thread but here some stuff from it to help you...

Stocker heads

Horrible exhaust ports on head

See the difference on the ported one compared to the stock one??

You need to really port these valve bodys good. So much that the exhaust valve can drop into the valve body, youll know what I mean when you have them off (this isnt my picture but its a good one to get a idea)

The torq spec are easy to get and ill link them for you later. Thats the easy part. The hard part is just the time it takes to port them. But is well worth it.

Re: port/polish 3.1 heads
Yes take everything off to make it look like this except the timing cover and water pump, as I did that because I added a cam.
I added a cam, so if you do this is what your motor will look like when its tore apart

Re: port/polish 3.1 heads
Timeing is very easy to set up and theres a good proceedure to it that I know you can do.
Also that cam and lifters is just another option for max gain while its apart. That proceedure is also very easy and is in depth more on my thread of (cam instal q's) Remember this was my first attempt at tearing into a motor also and with help from ppl on this site it worked out for the best!

Re: port/polish 3.1 heads
Just find some different heads. Pick them up at a junk yard for like 20-50 bucks and off you go. Then you can do the whole assembly and such in a weekend.

dizzy
Whole intake system and fuel rail(just lay the fuel rail to the side as you really dont need to take any of the connections off of it)
The alt, powersteering pump, ac(if you have it) air pump.
Just unbolt the ex manifold from the heads them self, no sence in taking the whole manifold off.
And I know your gonna have questions about the lower intake manifold and the coolent by pass think.(when you get that far let me know and ill shoot a video of how to clean that mess up and make it easy to put back together)

Re: port/polish 3.1 heads
Yea since we have 3 intake parts, i just call them the upper, middle, and lower intakes. The lower one is easy to get off except the coolent adapter going into it, if you get that far just get that thing off. Dont worrie if you break the plastic tab as ill show you how to make it much better with a 8$ part from napa.

anything to do with exhaust, the bolts always come out easier when hot, sucks to work on hot parts but you don't break as many.
your bound to break one though, murphys laws.

just run the engine for 5-10 minutes shut it off then take off the ex manifold bolts, usually that makes them come out very easy

Re: port/polish 3.1 heads
only the upper intake though right ? stick it back on. i always start at the ex manifolds.
if they are that tought to get remove them with the heads and get the bolts out on the bench. its usually easier once the heads are off the car

Re: port/polish 3.1 heads
For your intake use some sandpaper and such to smooth it out once you get the casting off of it. You can see in my pics that I did the same thing to mine. I applied 4 coats of blk heat paint then 2 light coats of clear coat and a year later its still looks good.

Re: port/polish 3.1 heads
Its the best cold air intake you can get in my mind, for the thirdgens. Im not sure of gains but a 5hp gain wouldnt be overstated on a warmer day. And I really got it because it looked very nice and very clean for a intake system.
I got this from a local junk yard for 20 bucks!
I dont think they relized how exspensive they could be as this one was in perfect condition even had the MAF sensor that was still good with it(gave the MAF sensor to a friend with a 2.8L).Exspect to pay more then that though as I sold it for 50 bucks plus shipping a little while ago and really thats not exspencive for how nice of shape it was in. The one I had was really a perfect one, in perfect shape.
But call arround in junk yards and such and you might get lucky like I did and pick one up for super cheep. Also it is very easy to install as its a factory item.
Look on older thirdgens for this system(2.8L V6's and TPI V8's) Mine came off of a 1986 2.8L Camaro.

Re: port/polish 3.1 heads
What part of the intakes did you port>>These? Because the biggest place I saw that could use some gasket matching/porting was the middle to lower intake, the TB to upper intake, and the lower intake to the heads.

This is before I cleaned the porting up

Front of upper intake where TB connects

Wait till you get into the valve bodies and port them then you'll see a good gain.

Re: port/polish 3.1 heads
i cleaned up the valve body real good too. i got a top end gasket kit and put new gaskets on EVERYTHING lol. thorttle body. egr tube everything..lol the old gaskets were like.fricked..lol brittle as crap. i see alot better thorttle response. after and the seafoam treatment REALY helped i would suggest useing it to EVERYONE..if yall need a how to asfars as useing it on the intake and such just PM me. so just a testiment to the gains/restore of power. i went to the grocery store to get my sick wife some gignerale (which they didnt have) there was an old man checkin out my hot ride and go figure i stalled it....needless to say i needed to save face so i started it back up and got on it a little. and oh boy did i do a good smokeshow. lol made up for the embbarasement if you ask me lol..all in all, even porting and polishing the plentum and thorotle body, aswell as replacing ALL the gaskets and the seafoam treatment was WELL WELL WELL worth the time and LITTLE money it took.
