Australian 1982 Camaro Story
Australian 1982 Camaro Story
Hi Guys,
Im from Australia and picked up this 1982 Camaro Sports Coupe 2.8L about 6 or 7 years ago and havent driven it more than 50km since i purchased it.
Story goes, when i first purchased it, it had been sitting in a carport for about 5 years after an uncle of mine had purchased it at an auction but it wasnt turning over.
So before i purchased it from him i tried to get the thing started it ended up being the ignition module i swapped it over and bam started first go and was amazed at how quiet and smooth the engine was.
When i first got the car the only interior it had was the dash, front seats and carpet, no door trims, no rear seat, no rear seat belts, no rear carpet.
Luckily my cousin had two third gens, one was a write off but he needed some parts from it but didnt need the interior so i managed to get the rest of the interior for nothing, score! also replaced the front windscreen as it had a crack.
Next step was to see if i could register it, it had been shipped over from the states had already been converted (mirror conversion) as opposed to a chain conversion, so all the under hood is a mirror of what you guys have, which was a bonus but i didnt have any paperwork with it.
First step was to take it to a conversion place to make sure the conversion was done properly and to get an engineers report for Australian standards. The only thing i needed to change was the drivers mirror, the glass needs to be different here.
Once the engineers report was complete it was time to take it to our vehicle inspection centre where the numbers were checked and all was ok. Then they go over the car to check brakes, lights etc and that all past so it was then registered.
This was back about 4 years ago but when i drove it home i noticed a wheel bearing noise but not having any time i only got around to it last weekend.
So the wheel bearing are now changed all that is left is to respray the hood, bumpers and lower it and im ready to cruise.
Ive attached some pics of what its like so far, if anyone else wants pics of under the hood to look at the conversion let me know.

From what i recall when i went to get the conversion checked out they said the steering components are out of a HQ Holden, which is an australian car.

Not a Camaro but a 87 Firebird I like the parts they used on mine I have no idea what model they are off but you could never tell.
Sorry to hijack but I would like to see some other pictures of Aussie cars as well.

Re: Australian 1982 Camaro Story
The heater box is under the left side of the dash. the rest of the car is nice except for the front right hand guard and bumper but I have a front cut from Arizona.
Plans for it is restoration, once I get parts it should take me about 2 months.
