2.8 to 3.1 Carbed

Ok, so heres the deal. My buddy says fuel injection is the cool thing and you get so much more ponies with it. This may be true. But, when I think of a muscle car its a big motor with a carb on the top with chrome valve covers and air intake. So heres what I was thinking. I want to convert my 2.8 to a 3.1 but, I need all the parts out of a 3.1. But, the problem is I don't want fuel injection. I want a carb on the top. Preferably a 4 bbl. So i can put a round chrome air cleaner on the top. Is there any way I can do that with a 3.1? I know you can do it to a 2.8 but its EXPENSIVE. I mean, I want to have a 3.1 carbed with chrome headers which I got and chrome valve covers which I also have. Any thoughts?

Re: 2.8 to 3.1 Carbed

The 2.8, 3.1 and 3.4 engines are all the same block so you'd have to use the carb kit for the 2.8, unless your 2.8 is already carb'd (I don't know if they ever were?). I'd say it probably isn't worth it of your current setup still runs fine. Though you might be able to fabricate a mount and hose so you could use one of those chrome air cleaners over the plenum if you wanted.
The other thing you could do is keep the stock setup and polish the aluminum plenum to a mirror shine, though niether of those options has the same sound as an old carb'd engine.

Re: 2.8 to 3.1 Carbed

He has a pre 85 carbed 2.8L currently in the car.

Im his buddy that said that he should go fuel injected...I just like EFI. better thats all. Carbs confuse me, as I just can't hook a computer up to it and tune it like you can with EFI.

What he's saying that is he wants to just mount the carb set up on the 2.8L he has at the moment. Any block post 85 2.8/3.1/3.4L is beter then that pre 1985 one you've got, IMO

I can't say it would work forsure as I've never seen/heard anyone go from a carbed 2.8L to a 3.1/3.4L block with the carbed intake system on the top. Usually its the otherway arround.

Im sure someone wil chime in on this that knows whats going on as I have no idea on this one.

Re: 2.8 to 3.1 Carbed

his carb setup will swap ontop any of the rwd v6's

2.8/3.2/3.4

he just needs to swap his current intake and carb, along with distributor onto the new engine

in order to do a 4bbl he would have to buy the edelbrock manifold base and 4bbl carb top ,and then the holley 390cfm 4bbl carb which will run almost 1k for the carb intake and intake top

1k could be put to much better use on that engine then putting a 4bbl carb and intake on it
