Harmonic Balancer Question

I purchased dorman 594-147 which weighs 5.42 lbs and its diameter is 6.36 and installed it.

rockauto has listed a different balancer dorman 594-013 which weighs 5.6 lbs and diameter is 5 1/2 with a smaller width.

Does any of this matter? My current balancer is the one with the metal cage on the back of it.

87 2.8 v6 camaro.

Im asking because it looks like the crank has a slight wobble or something.

Anyone?

Anyone have any pictures of there 2.8's with the balancer attached. I threw my old balancer in the trash and didnt take notice of how it looked!! Although the one I threw out didnt have that shield that the one I current have on has.

There are two different balancers this is what they look like:

I have the first one installed. Specs are: Type : Solid Diameter : 6.36" Width : 2.29" Weight (lbs.) : 5.42 Make & OE# : GM 14100630

I dont think they are just one is turned more to the right then the other...I wonder if the wrong balancer could cause wobble, It is said to fit the 2.8l v6. I dont get it........................ugh

Re: Harmonic Balancer Question

The crank snouts are the same, for all 660s (at least all that matter for this thread), so the wrong balancer won't cause a "wobble."

Re: Harmonic Balancer Question

It just doesn't look right the belt system that is. I sometimes get a belt vibration or noises etc. The only thing that doesn't seem or look right is the balancer looks weird.

There has got to be a reason there is two different balancers with different weights and diameters right?

It also says in the "Application notes," two different numbers for each balancer so I think I was suppose to go by that but I threw my old balancer out...

First one:
1987CHEVROLETCAMAROV6 - 2.8L (173 CID): GAS: FI: N: S •Stamped 4955

second one:
1987CHEVROLETCAMAROV6 - 2.8L (173 CID): GAS: FI: N: S •Stamped 9033

Idk maybe ill get the one with the holes in it try it out. I just changed out the RMS and Cam cover gasket maybe ill also try and rotate the torque converter bit by bit.

Re: Harmonic Balancer Question

ok...after some research I guess the bigger and heavier torsional dampers are to decrease vibrations at higher RPMs and increases power.

Re: Harmonic Balancer Question

The one with the cage on the back is for a engine that provides both a 24X and a 3X signal to the ECM. The cage is actually a trigger wheel for the 24X signal. Not sure which vehicle used that set up, although a '94 f-body with the 3.4l engine is a candidate.

So shouldn't matter if it's on my 2.8 right?

Wouldn't cause any problems?

As long as the timing mark is in the correct location and the distance from the end of the snout to the front face is the same you are good to go.

The only other item would be if it wasn't balanced the same, although they both appear to be neutral balanced. And you would know if it wasn't as the engine would vibrate like crazy.

Re: Harmonic Balancer Question

I think they are in the same location.. I am sure I checked that out but who knows. I was going to keep my old one but my brother convinced me it was trash and not to hang on too it...stupid me. Im just worried because when I was on the highway I got a hellish vibration throughout the whole car when I was going about 55, and it didnt seem to want to go any faster. Then I released the gas pedal brought it down to 40 and it went through the range 55, 65, 70 without a problem...who knowsss.
