Re: MPG Thread

When I had a cam, ported heads and some exhaust items it was basically the same but I also tuned the Ecm. Its speed density so a cam and the porting work made the car rich at idle(stoplights and such) Untill I tuned it. MAF is different and I cant speak for that as mine does not have that set up. Mabey a few more if anything as it wasent so much of a dog and I didnt need to floor it to get it to move...LOL The V6 Mpgs generly wont change to much if your driving habits are the same, unless the car is in diar need of a tune up. Then if the engines out of shape it will suffer in Mpgs both in town and you will definitly see it on the highway.

Read this: https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/v6/1...-do-major.html

If you have had the car for sometime or just got it and are asking if it needs a tune up, you may just need one. If in doubt and you are planning to use the car as a daily driver for time to come, putting a little money into preventitive mantinace items will save you money in the long run. Look at the engine, is it dirty as crap and looks like it hasent been apart ever? Does it have somewhat high miles? Get poor Mpgs? All of those answers should help you decide if she needs some attention to keep her in tip top shape.

After a tune up, my 1992 Firebird with 3.1 V6 and T5 transmission gets 19 mpg in town and 27-29 mpg highway (29 mpg if I keep it under 70mph which I rarely do). This was before any mods. Since then, I've opened up the filter air box to make it Warm Air Induction (WAI) and installed a high flow catalytic converter. Haven't checked mpg, but noticed a significant increase in power with the WAI.

A new set of quality spark plugs, wires, and distributor parts was a cheap price for better mpg. The car is my daily driver and very reliable.

LP is not used commonly here in the US, you would be very hard pressed to find a filling station.

200,000 miles on a 3.1 and still getting good gas mileage. Have you had to do any work on the internals of the engine or exhaust manifold?

Re: MPG Thread

well The previous owner said the Motor may have been changed before he got it. couldnt prove it. I've tried finding block codes. cant find any.... nothing has been altered under the hood. been converted to 134a and thats it. exhaust manifolds i had to re-tighten them right after i bought it. started to leak and i lucked out shes been quiet since. the tranny fluid is kinda dark tho... scares me alittle lol I wish i knew somebody here in NC with a garage so i could change it. I just relocated. and dont know anyone down here.

I know the feeling. I don't have a garage or driveway. So, I have to do my repairs on the street. My neighbors are used to seeing my car on jack stands on the weekends while I fritz with it.

I've got a manual transmission and I used a similar pump from Advance Auto to change the fluid. It worked well. I also have a large bag of clay cat litter. After making repairs involving fluids, I sprinkle the cat litter and later sweep it up. Doubt my neighbors give a crap, but I feel better doing it.

Yea, I'm used to having 10 acres of land on a small road(My Parents) and now that im living in a apartment Complex 1100miles away I'm finding it Really sh**y. hahaha I dont even know if im allowed to change my oil in the parking lot. I'm waiting on a background check for a job and hopefully I can use a Bay once in awhile but i wont hold my breath. Big corporations suck at letting techs work on personal stuff...
