2.8 died. need advice.
My rad fan went out and like an idiot, I drove the car without it and I blew a head gasket. So the repair bill is around 1000. I found a motor out in jersey, a 3.1. 800 with install. I would really rather go for the 3.4. If anyone was in my shoes, and did not want to go V8..........Anyone know where to get a good 3.4 block? Is it a gamble on getting a good used motor?

Moved this to the V6 forum. For two reasons: 1) You'll get better answers; and 2) you won't have to put up with people telling you to just put in a V8.

Ya I have a 3.1 and I'm looking for a 3.4 block I can order a brand new long block from napa for 1700$ 3 year warranty if u give them a 3.4 core they -300. Your 2.8 block is only worth -150.
I have 300k on my 3.1 so I'm holding off a little longer I still get 28mpg with my 3.1
Not sure if anywhere else has a better price.

Look arround junk yards and craigslist. Theres where I got my engine from for very cheep. I dont ever see any sence in buying a new block...lol its cheeper to build it right from scratch then go that route.
Tear that engine down if you can. Ive blown headgaskets and not harmed anything. But I also did run it hot as you probly did so your heads may be warped.....

3.4s are $200 + 50 core at local u-pull salvage yards.
And swap a v8 in it!

Its a thin line I think... I would think that the smaller the engine the better highway mpgs you would get. But if it was me I would rebuild a 3.4L if possible, just becasue of the extra boost in power.

And I agree with Eddi, 3.4s complete are cheap, I picked up a 88k mile motor for $200, just gotta search!
