new gm owner here
ive never really messed with gms so im going out of my comfort zone with a third gen firebird with a 2.8l im not a huge v8 fan (i own an S4 myself) i would like to stay classy with a v6 but im not sure where to start with this one i originally wanted a grand national swap but im finding those few and far between i need a 5 speed and i was reading about a 5 speed in the 5.0 birds but would that bolt up to my 2.8 also iam definatley adding a turbo and was wondering what i was looking forward to as far as an engine build

what year 2.8?
u can do a turbo system for around 800 bucks to start , if u want big power u will spend around 1200
can u weld and do ur own fab work?
what condition is the engine in now ?
btw a 5 speed behind a turbo v6 will require an exspensive clutch to take the power even at low boost
cclutch will run around 250-400 bucks depending on how much power u want

dont do a turbo system on that car , that has the carbed engine which has crappy small valve heads and small crank journals. those engines are known to break the small cranks even bone stock
wat u would want to do is get a 3.1 or 3.4 engine , and swap in the ecm from a 90-92 car , and then turbocharge that

Welcome to the site and listen to what Porject 89 and fasteddi say-they know their stuff very well. They are right the 82 should have the 3-speed auto in it and it's not very good at all. I take it you have a 82 Sport Coupe? got any pix?

Re: new gm owner here
If you're looking for a 5-speed get one out of a 3rd or 4th gen V6 car and it should bolt up. Crossmember may be different but you can use one from a 5-speed 3rd gen. I'm not sure if the driveshaft will work from a 3-speed, but any 700r4/4L60E or 5/6-speed 3rd or 4th gen driveshaft should work; best to get an aluminum one since they're usually pretty cheap anyway.
A V8 5-speed is more-or-less the same transmission with IIRC different gearing but you would need a V6 bellhousing anyway because it's different.
I put a 6-speed behind my V6 but it's probably the most expensive transmission option.
