86 5speed trouble
got a salvageyard motor out of a 89 FB.changed the stuff off my base 86 FB onto it.the salvage people keep the 5speed flywheel.I put my 86 manual flywheel on it.I have to much vibration and alot of smoke after motor has run for a while.Startup showed no smoke for a few min. and stedly gets worse. Do I need that 89 flywheel. How long dose it take to mess up the motor?I have no knocking right now

Re: 86 5speed trouble
An 88+ V6 should have a neutral balanced flywheel, pre-88 should have a weight on the back. Mix'n'matching between the two is bound to cause problems... probably where the vibration is coming from.

Re: 86 5speed trouble
Just what I feared. If the flywheel on 88+ are neutral, than would a 88 work on the 87 and older motor if they have there original balancer on the front?Or would a person have to have them special balanced buy a real shop!I'm told we cant get 5speed trans for or cars new.How about gears and such as that? What can be done when they tear up?

Re: 86 5speed trouble
The thing on the front of the crank is NOT a "balancer". It's a damper. All it does is to absorb the harmonic frequencies from the movement of the rotating assembly. The actual balancing is either done with a weight on one of the crank arms or on the flexplate/flywheel. The 88+ use the weight on the crank. The earlier ones have a weight on the wheel.
You need to pick up an 88+ flywheel pronto. Unless you want to swap out the crank. It doesn't have to be from an F-body as all later engines used the same parts whether or not they were auto or manual (flexplates are the same and flywheels are the same).

I wouldn't run the engine at all until the correct flywheel is installed.
The front 'balancer' is irrelevant. If you ever need to replace the T5, you're probably looking at a rebuild or a junkyard trans.

Re: 86 5speed trouble
the damper dose have some extra holes drilled in it that the 89 dont have.I called the place I got the motor from. They are holding the flywheel pressureplate and clutch plate for me for 50$. I run the motor for about 5 min with a short drive around the block.parked it and then started it about 2 hrs latter.after changing the front damper, just in case that was my trouble.run it about 5 min in the drive.the motor olny vibrated when reved on the way back to idle.the yard says it didnt smoke before they pulled it.But the longer it run the worse it smoked.Friend told me the flywheel thing would have nothing to do with it smokin.the yard says its just old stuff in the exsaust.

Re: 86 5speed trouble
whitish blue.plus smelled like oil burnin. The problem the motor I took out was white and had alot of gas getting into oil.I'm going to put that other flywheel on it and see what happens.I've got 4 other motors I can fumble with.2 need cranks.one is a 3.1,one is an 89 2.8.also have another 89 2.8 with an auto tran, dont know whats up with it yet.and that 86 2.8 needs ring job probly.thinkin about putting the 86 crank into the 89 that has a crank thats got to much damage to put back together without doing somthing to it.I'm going to be forced to do a rebuild sooner or latter.also got a LG4 needs ring job

Re: 86 5speed trouble
not sure why, think it may have been rings.Because I changed everything on top.I had a compleat set up from plenume up.didnt help.Changed motor to a auto salvage and it dosnt smoke when started cold. But after 5 min. go for a test dive and blue stuff all over my mesquito crop. I did get rid of the vibration when I changed the flywheel.I'm going to be forced to do a top end rebuild or ring job.never done it before. But I got 4 motors siting here and gota try some day.
