O2 sensor location

I need a little visual help guys, I was told that inside the engine compartment there are two O2 sensors that supposedly control fuel trim and since I've owned the car they haven't been replaced and I've been advised to go ahead and swap these out. Could someone maybe point me in the right direction as to where these two sensors are? I was told there is one on both sides but I don't know what I'm looking at.

Re: O2 sensor location

Um, if its a stock V6 AFAIK there is only one O2 sensor. Its in the exhaust pipe in front of the cat converter. Its virtually the only thing sticking out of the pipe itself.

I dont know if its the same on your v6, being its a 91, but thats how my 89 2.8 v6 is.

Re: O2 sensor location

Okay, I may just swap out that o2 sensor then. My car has a lean condition, it smells like firecrackers when I drive it and it stalls pretty often. I was taking the plenum off yesterday and checking some things and I found a puddle of gas in the bottom of the throttle body and on top of the fuel rail. I cleaned out the IAC valve and checked the FPR diaphragm and fuel pump and both checked out fine. I'm just trying to rule some things out.

Does it have the original injectors? Check the orings on the injectors and you may want to look into new injectors, its about that time anyway.

If you do go for new injectors, id recommend South Bay, its a vendor thats on here who has great customer service, good prices, and a thirdgen.org member discount! Its who i got my injectors from and was really happy.

And while im thinking about it, test your fuel pressure, should be no lower than 45psi IIRC

Re: O2 sensor location

I have two new injectors that the shop installed back in 2010 and four remanufactured ones from southbay but I suppose it couldn't hurt to check the resistance in each one to make sure. The car is showing a code 35 and I'm being told by my mechanic friend that if I continue to drive the car the way I am eventually the catalytic converter will melt and he thinks that I have a bad carbon build up in the throttle body. At this point I'm willing to try anything, thank you for the advice!

Have you ever replaced the cat converter?

Re: O2 sensor location

IIRC when a o2 sensor goes bad it will make a rich condition, usually you will notice a drop in mpg as soon as it goes bad. The ecm will go into a open loop and run off the pre determined fueling tables without any closed loop corrections off of Mv o2 readings.

I would definitely check the fuel pressure when its primed before starting, when running, and then after you shut if off see the leak down psi and how long it took to start to fall off if it does.

Also check vacuum leaks while your at it. Might as well rule out any issues that may be over lapping.

I read "smells like firecrackers and likes to stall." Almost sounds like a clogged catcon too. And if the throttle body was never cleaned, or hasnt been in awhile, thats definitely something to do as well.

Re: O2 sensor location

Hey guys, yeah I had the catcon replaced back in 09 but it smells something awful. I was advised to clean out the TB and replace these supposed O2 sensors on either side of the engine and then do a tune up. I'm not mechanically inclined so forgive my vocab but he and ASEdoc on this forum both mentioned that continuing to drive my car this way will burn out/melt the catcon because of hydrocarbons. For the longest time the engine would idle in park up to about 2.5k rpm steadily but when put in drive it would bog down and stall (especially when the power steering would put a load on the engine). It's acting like it's not getting enough of gas or air but always starts back up. Normally the TB takes in air but my friend said the way my engine is running at some point (if not already) it would start blowing air out. Based on what all I've mentioned, does this just sound like a carbon problem?

Re: O2 sensor location

Code 35 is an IAC (Idle air control valve)code. Give this link a read and see if its similar.
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tech...ng-1991-a.html

And your video link is broken.

Also if your O2 sensor is bad then the computer runs off of a set table with no correction IIRC.
I would pick up a new O2 sensor and see where to go from there.

Re: O2 sensor location

I think I may do that given that it's an inexpensive fix. I know that whatever is wrong is a fuel or air problem and I'm very confident my catcon is playing a part in the problem. I'll repost the video link, thank you for letting me know!

Re: O2 sensor location

It looks like your TPS sensor isnt adjusted properly, looks like its at 25% when its supposed to be at 0%, cause when you get on it it jumps over 100%, which isnt right.

I would adjust it so its at 0% with the car at idle.

Also do you have a 160* thermostat? cause your running coolant at 159*, unless your using C instead of F for temp.

I would see where your O2 sensor range is supposed to be and double check that to make sure its operating peoperly, also check to see if your catcon is running at the right temp, unless that catcon temp reading is a fluke and you have no way to know what temp its running at. IDK about the 91, but im pretty sure the 89 I have cant tell the temp of the catcon when I had it still.
