Winter is Starting Early
Hello everyone, I have been on TGO since April of last year, which is when I bought my camaro. Although I have not been very active in posting, I plan to change that.
I didn't know whether to post this in the V6 category or Members Camaros, but I figured since my car is obviously a V6, I would get more individual attention from members who respect and know these engines inside and out.
So as the thread states, winter is starting early. Mainly because when I bought my car, the PO must have ran the drivers side rear end into a curb. I didnt notice a slight bend in the axle causing the wheel to wobble. Well now it has progressed to a very noticeable state and is off the road.
To be optimistic, I'm looking at this as an early start. First things first:
- New Rear End. Probably going with a 4th gen w/ posi carrier. Doing this so I don't have to use spacers for the corvette rims I so crave
- Paint and body work. Since I painted the top half of my car black, i can really pick out the imperfections. This gives me a good chance to fix those mistakes and make this into a great example car.
- Suspension. Not to sure yet, but I am on a budget.
- Engine Work. I have done a lot of research lately on turbocharging the 3.1l. It seems like a lot of work, but I am up for the challenge. I know how to weld, so that isn't an issue. Plus my dad use to run turbo set ups on his dune buggies, so he knows the basics.
Due to my budget, I will probably end up with a t3/t4 hybrid. I don't push the car very hard, and it wont be at the drags.
All said and done, i would love to push the lil V6 to above 250 hp at the flywheel. I don't think that is an unreasonable goal. I would love for everyone to leave their own input on my plans. If you haven't realized I have high hopes for this car (it is my first car) and would love to achieve them. Any help will be greatly appreciated
Thanks,
John

Re: Winter is Starting Early
Your goal to get 250 hp is definitly obtainable. Since its the 3.1, tuning won't be too hard. Have you any experience with ecm tuning? I didn't when I started three or so years ago. Alot of ppl can help you learn the basics.
A t3/4 hybrid turbo would definitly do the trick I'll have to look up some and link them. Are we talking name brand or ebay turbo?. You would probly want to get arround 30 lbs injectors or so. South bay is a great vendor on this site.
A different camshaft would help alot. Delta cams makes a nice 260 grind cam for about 120 shipped with lifters. That's the same cam I've been running for the past few years.
You'll also need a wide band 02 sensor kit. Alot of ppl out there sell them.
Tuning is the most important aspect of the build IMO
Reads and re-read the stickys for turboing in the v6 performance sticky. Alot of good basics in there .

Re: Winter is Starting Early
Unfortunately I have no experience with ECM tuning, that that will be the hardest part. Luckily I am a very quick learner, especially when it comes to computers (custom built mine). I know I need to read more into it though and get a better understanding.
As for the turbocharging components I have already compiled a pretty good list of what I need from reading over most of the forums. Here is what I have on my list so far:
T3/t4 eBay Turbo
30# Injectors - Southbay
RFL Blow Off Valve
38mm Wastegate
3 Bar Map Sensor
260 Cam - Delta
Wideband o2 Sensor
Oil Lines
PS - Log Headers
That is what I have so far for my parts list. Any adittional ideas would be great. Still not sure on the tuning equipment though. But unfortunately the main thing I have to do is install the new rear end before I buy turbo components.
Also from reading over many of the threads and watching your videos mark I see you race at Milan? I'm from the Monroe area about half an hour away.

I sure will. I haven't played with the private message on TGO but if you could give me a heads up when you are going out there that would be awesome. I seriously live like 20 minutes away from milan, actually went out there for the "Backstreet Cruizerz" car show at the park.

Re: Winter is Starting Early
word of advice if u do turbo it skip the usual t3/t4 hybrid , spend the extra 100$'s and buy the gt3582, ull spend a lil more upfront , but less money in the long run

Yah I have seen the gt3582 come up quite a lot here. I hope to go that route if money allows. This is a budget build, but I have heard and read great things about the gt3582.

Re: Winter is Starting Early
Just a little update:
Bought some 28 spline axles for my rear end for $20, couldn't pass them up. Probably going in late tomorrow or on Tuesday. I also plan to freshen up the rear with some fresh fluid and a new gasket. What fluid do you guys recommend? It is an open diff if that matters.
I should be able to start purchasing turbo components in the next few weeks. I'll get a list with some links so everyone can review them and put in personal opinions.

80-90w gear oil is fine , since u have 28 spline axles u can see if u can pick up a cheap torsen unit out of a 4thgen , , dont attempt it unles su know how to resetup the gears during the swap though , as u will need to reshim the carrier from side to side more then likley

Also, I will definitely be making it out to Milan on Sunday. Hopefully I can drive the camaro, but I am having a slight heating issue. I finally re installed my fan (fan shroud was warped, wouldn't cool down), and I let it idle in my driveway for about half an hour. The fan never kicked on. Don't want to drive it and take the chance of it over heating. Any ideas?
Thanks,
John

Re: Winter is Starting Early
Does the fan ever kick on? Could be the relay, a broken wire, bad fan, also make sure the temp wire on the lower intake is hooked up. The one on the heads is for the Guage in the car.
I still plan to be out there. Gotta check a few things out on the car tonight. It was acting strange the other day.

Ok sweet, I'll be out there around 10:30.
And I'll have to look around some more. We took the test light to it at 230 degrees and there was still no juice going to the fan! This thing is driving me nuts!

Re: Winter is Starting Early
Ok so over the weekend, I met with mark and really got moving on pulling together some parts for this build. Here is what I have on my list so far:
Godspeed Gt3582r Turbo - $307.91
Godspeed 38mm Gt-Series Wastegate (7psi,11psi,15psi springs) - $97.99
Adjustable Type-H RFL BOV - $39.95
Godspeed Aluminum Front Intercooler (28"x6"x.25") - $93.99
Delta 260 Grind Camshaft - $116.00
Walbro 255 LPH Fuel Pump - $89.99
Southbay Injectors???? (Can't find the right LB on the website)
Oil Supply??? (What to look for?)
Piping?? **Log Headers** (Header Flanges? Where to buy? What to buy?)
I am estimating around $1200 which is quite a lot in my current situation. Some things changed and my grandpas house is being sold so a majority of the money will be from that. I think this is what he would have wanted because he was very much into hot rods and he is where I got my interest from. Feedback please guys! Also what should I look for to tune the stock ecm?
Any help is much appreciated,
John

That would be great. I did see some models of the gt3582 at like $260ish, but it was another $40 for shipping. Everything on the current list has free shipping from amazon. With the exception of the camshaft and the fuel pump.

Re: Winter is Starting Early
there are a few ways to tune the ecm but here is what i use and for a lower cost it works very well.
All from moates.net
Burn2Chip programmer: this is what actually burns the eprom chips
http://www.moates.net/burn2-chip-pro....html?cPath=64
Gp1 Package: This includes the adapter so that you can install and remove the chip easily and also includes 2 27sf512 chips which you can reprogram literly a million+ times.
http://www.moates.net/gp1-package-gm....html?cPath=64
To datalog I use a aldl cable from aldlcables.com. This is what connects your cars obd1 port to your laptop via a usb cable for the laptop.
http://aldlcables.com/products/aldlobd1u.asp
Then for the software I use TunerproRT. Its a great program! Free to download at tunerpro.net and you can donate if you want. Believe me its worth a donation if you use if for a while as its a great program.
http://tunerpro.net/downloadApp.htm
When the time comes for a turbo there are a few ways to tune it and me and others here will give you all the help you need to get you started. Its a tad overwhelming to tune a ecm but once you do it and start to understand what your looking at, its not too bad.

To datalog I use a aldl cable from aldlcables.com. This is what connects your cars obd1 port to your laptop via a usb cable for the laptop.

Then for the software I use TunerproRT. Its a great program! Free to download at tunerpro.net and you can donate if you want. Believe me its worth a donation if you use if for a while as its a great program.

When the time comes for a turbo there are a few ways to tune it and me and others here will give you all the help you need to get you started. Its a tad overwhelming to tune a ecm but once you do it and start to understand what your looking at, its not too bad.

I'll probably order all the tuning equipment later this week so I can get a feel for it. What will be most useful is the live datalogging and I'm sure getting a head start on the basics will really help when the turbo comes into play. Also thank you project89 for the new links to the gt3582r and the Wastegate. Any money saved will be spent somewhere else.
Thanks again! Updates soon! Got the car back on the road, next step is probably doing a toggle switch for the radiator fan. And driving it till fall.

Hey everyone,
I think I'm going to take the plunge and order the tuning equipment very soon. Is there any perks to ordering it now? Of course I can start to play with it and live data logging, but is there any little things I can do to increase the current performance? Just curious because I am completely new to this.
Thanks!

Re: Winter is Starting Early
Just a little update,
About 2 weeks ago the camaro was involved in a crash. Guy in front of me slammed on his brakes, I hit mine, and they locked up. Five more feet and I would have cleared it. Mainly damage to the front clip, fender, and hood. It's a little more in depth that that, but it's the jist of it.
Winter project is to fix and repaint it, maybe drive it a little. Picked up a '92 RS 305 w/ a t5 in great shape for a great price. Sorry guys, but I don't think the V6 turbo will be happening, but it's better this happened now than after the build.
Thanks for all the help and knowledge, maybe it will go towards a future build.
