How good is the stock 3.4 cam?
I've heard that the stock cam in a 3.4 is pretty good. Is it worth it to change it if I'm putting a 3.4 into my car?
If so, which one should I get?

If you have the funds for a new cam I'd go with a new one. deltacams. The 260 or even the 272 grind would help. You planning on porting those heads out still?

yes. What mods do I need to do to the chip if I use a 3.4 with either one of those cams?
I wrote a mod yesterday to see if we could get the porting thread unlocked so those pics could be restored. No answer yet

Re: How good is the stock 3.4 cam?
I talked to sixshooter a little while back. I just need to take the time to load all the pics back on there and let him know. Thats why i tossed them all on my v6performace fb group. It was faster to do at the time.
Right now im working 6 10 hr days a week and welding at school 8 hrs a week. So my weeks are shot right now.

I know, it's nice following them in the context of the discussion. A lot easier to understand what I'm looking at.

Re: How good is the stock 3.4 cam?
if the majority of its life is in town and daily driving 260
if hes going to race it now and then id do the 272
being he has a stick the 272 would actually work pretty decent for a dd car
58 if u dont mind lossing some bottom end get the 272 it will have good midrange and great top end
the 260 is a solid mid range cam
if i were to build a 3.4 with the 272 normally aspirated it would be a 3.4 with the dohc 3.4 pistons for a 10-1 cr, ported heads , 3.4 intake and headers , with a 3:73 or 4:10 rear gear

Not planning on doing anything to change stock compression. Not sure what the 3.4 has from the factory, I guess I better look that up

Adding some steeper gears and a posi would help out the car alot and make it alot funner to drive. May be something to work towards after you finish up your engine work.

Re: How good is the stock 3.4 cam?
I just got myself another Camaro, and it already has the 3.4 in it, because its a '94.
Of course I'm hoping to someday do an LSx, but meanwhile I was thinking about mods, like headers, porting vs 3400 top end, and an S-10 2.2L torque converter. I already have some 3.42:1 gears and a locking diff to swap in place of the 303,600-mile 3.23:1 with open diff.
I checked every cam company, and the only shelf cam that tempts me is Crower's 03043: 212/218, 112, 435/449
These iron heads have decent if not excellent exhaust flow for the intake flow, especially at higher elevation with headers, so that soured me on the Crane cams. But they're not excellent enough for a single-pattern Comp, IMO.
I have considered larger valves to go with some porting, but at that point the 3400 top end swap makes more sense to me. And once I find flow numbers on those, that may skew my cam choice.
So I just won't buy a cam until I decide the rest.
