84 2.8l fuel injection swap

Hi guz, so iv got a few questions, on how exactly to put fuel injection on my 2.8. it is a 2bbl car and the carb seems to be giving up, had starting issues over this past winter that it didnt have the previous one. been giving me some idle issues currently as well. So i figure why not just upgrade to injection. id just swap the whole engine, but i dont have the option to.

i have done some searching around and found that i need the intake, TB, and wire harness and ECM.

is there anything else i need, or is anything on my current setup usable?

thanks in advance!

That's the jist of it.

IIRC your car should already have a return line from the fuel pump, and that can be used for the fuel return from the engine.

You will also want to swap the fuel pump.

yea, its got a mechanical right now lol, was ganna go with an inline pump

would any of the existing sensors work with the injection? also i can get all the parts i need for $150 from a junk yard near me, but its off a 3.1, would that still work?

Re: 84 2.8l fuel injection swap

the 2.8 system will work better out of the box , but the 3.1 is a more tuneable ecm ,
putting the 3.1 system on ur stock 2.8 carbed engine it will run a good bit rich .
theres a few things u can do into tricking the ecm to lea it out to get u started , untill u can get somone to burn u a tune for it.

i will suggest while ur at the junkyard stipping off the intake grab the heads as well if they are cheap enough , they are better then the carbed motor heads so u will pick up some hp by swapping those as well , and its only a tiny bit of work once u have the intake off ayways

Re: 84 2.8l fuel injection swap

ah, well im not sure anyone near me can burn a chip but ill have to look around

i can get a 2.8 wire harness and ECM(hopfully) but all but the top of the plenum are gone, found the top lol, the whole 3.1 is there though, i also dont want to spend to much on this swap

i was thinking i could use the middle plenum and lower intake off the 3.1 and the harness/ECM and top plenum form the 2.8 it could work out

Re: 84 2.8l fuel injection swap

iac on the 2.8 tb wont work properly without the lower 2.8 manifold

but if ur getting the a complete 3.1 intake/tb it will work with the 2.8 ecm , just be aware u may have to change the connectors for the tps and iac to use the 2.8 ecm and harness witht he 3.1 stuff , u can get them for a few bucks at any parts store

Re: 84 2.8l fuel injection swap

ok finaly have an update...got caught up with work...swaped the injection system on but the injectors arnt getting power. figuered out that the 84 didnt have fuses for injeciton, im guessing that why no power for injectors...correct me if im wrong.

it will run a few seconds on starter fluid so i know it has spark...and its getting fuel (about 48 psi)

so my question is can i jump power to the injectors or what should i do to fix that problem?

thanks in advance!
