Hard Starting 2.8

I have a 1986 Chevrolet Camaro with a 2.8L V6. It currently has 196,000 Miles. The only issue i have with it is a hard start when it is cold. You have to crank it over for anywhere between 8-12 seconds before it will start. It doesnt sputter, or kick or anything during this time. It only cranks. Once started it runs great, with no problems, and will restart fine. It will only act up when it has been sitting for over 4 or 5 hours with out being started. Any ideas other than a cold start valve? I checked it and its fine. My dad is a mechanic, and he has no clue as to why it does this. any help is appreciated.
Thanks.

Re: Hard Starting 2.8

Is it doing the two second fuel pump prime at key on ?

Cause if not , that would be the cause right there . If it's not running the pump for the two second prime , then it takes till you've cranked it enough for the oil pressure to cause the pump to run , which takes way longer on a cold engine than a warmed up one , especially at almost 200K miles ..

And if it IS doing the prime , 58Mark's suggestion of the fuel pressure regulator is a great thing to check . Have you taken a fuel pressure reading at the rail ?

Got an oil gauge?

common when things go goofy that it will not start till the engine build 7psi oil before the oil switch kicks the pump on.

And its really not a bad idea to build oil psi before you start. Cept people want instat start cars. Some fancy ones use electric pump to build oil psi before it starts, yet still instant starts.

Gumby - Yeah, i have an oil gauge. But it always reads perfect, and i checked the pressure manually. Its good. Thanks for the idea though.

Re: Hard Starting 2.8

watch the gauge, when the needle starts to move it then starts right? that would be the back up oil switch turing it on. AKA the relay system isn't working to prime the engine.

which again isn't a bad thing, mines been like that forever, probably why it will still burn the tires down to the rims at 250K, less start up wear as it has oil psi built before starting.
