Sorry if there have been posts on this already but im upgrading the car a bit. I just baught a 260h comp cam, valve springs, timing gears and chain, all new gaskets, pacesetter headers, and the dynomax exhaust system (thinking about switching to 80series muffler). Ive tried finding an CAI and better throttle body but no luck....help please?? Very new at this and its my first project....please leave all comments about a v8 swap out. Not happening lol

Re: 86 2.8 camaro
Like you, this is my first car like this and i couldn't find a CAI either, what i suggest is making your own out of some 3'' pvc pipe, ruin it down behind your rad or an open grill, and shove a big cone like K&N air filter on there, I'm going to do the same except run it up into the flow of air coming from a hood scoop, then you get your ram air and at least 25hp from that and the air filter

Re: 86 2.8 camaro
Locate the air snorkel from a TPI Iroc, take the MAF and gut it, and keep the upper and lower airbox halves and drop those in. Boom, Amazing CAI. Did this to mine, felt noticeable increase in throttle response.

Re: 86 2.8 camaro
don't gut a film MAF, hot wire MAF do what ya want....

CAI are dumb unless its takes in air directly from out side the car body...

Gumby, by Gut the MAF, I mean gut the one from the IROC, its useless on the V6 since our motors are speed density, and the rubber snorkel is too short by itself to go from the box to the throttle body. The IROC air box pulls fresh cold air from the grill area ahead of the radiator. It's the best thing available next to a ram air setup, which you could also make from the IROC air box. You will need to relocate the Air Intake Temperature sensor from the stock air can, I put mine into the gutted IROC MAF, it made sense to me. I can provide pictures if you'd like to see my setup.

Your standard clutch should be fine for the basic air in - air out mods, although with the snappier throttle your driving habits may require adjustment

Re: 86 2.8 camaro
Pictures would be awesome. How much hp/torque do you think i will gain from the cam, headers, exhaust, port and polished heads, and custom cai?

Re: 86 2.8 camaro
is venture to say at least 100, the cam can add up to 25, I'm going to do cam, exhaust and headers, and maybe get mine bored to a 3.4 at least since gm decided to use the same engine block for the 2.8 and 3.4, they are both the 173's so it shouldn't be too hard to adjust it, but that's the far future, rust repair, hood, wheels, then paint for me, ill update some other stuff along the way such as making it ram air maybe, new plugs and wires, exhaust, and some other little things

Re: 86 2.8 camaro
i wouldn't be so sure about 30, you can make a 2.8 have 200hp, you need money, but with he right hi-pro parts like i listed before, you can get a lot more than 30, just don't go take a 50 dollar cam of of ebay, find one that will actually make a difference

Re: 86 2.8 camaro
So do you think the 260h 10 comp cam is a good quality cam or are there better ones out there for this engine? It hass a 440 440 lift. I was thinking about putting 1.6 rocker arms on there(making it a 468 lift i think) but not sure if i would have enough clearance

u are not getting that much power on a 2.8 from ported heads , cam, cai , headers, most ppl here dont even know the correct way to port the heads , and when they try they will loose power instead of picking it up

ive built enough of them and have my own very fast v6 to know better

call delta and get a 260 cam if an automatic or a 270 cam if its a stick

the bigger the cam the higher up it makes its power, with a stick u can hold it in gear longer and also slip the clutch when taking off from a dead stop, with the auto u have to buy a higher stall converter for it to get out of its own way from a dead stop

theres plenty of builds threads on here u just have to search , theres also threads on cam choice and also porting the heads

Definitely not, you might pick up 35-50 depending on what parts you choose, i was responding to the statement about youll never get that much power out of a v6 cause you can, you just need the right parts, the 3.1 mpfi are ice cause they are easy to turbo and everything, very nice v6 to make fast, 2.8's are harder, 2.8 carb even harder since you cant upgrade just the injectors, its not necessary that its harder or not possible, but it takes lot more $$$$

Re: 86 2.8 camaro
with a 2.9, you cant get a whole lot of zip with out some cash, just put some hotter plugs and wires on there and a k&n air filter, and some royal purple enngine, trans, and rear oil, maybe some higher octane gas too, you might get a little bit more power, definitely not much, but its something

Re: 86 2.8 camaro
I don't even know what i just said honestly, you will not get more power from that, youll get more throttle response from the filter and plugs though....... late nights kill the mind

Re: 86 2.8 camaro
Ill try the bosch 2 spark plugs and 91 octane and filter but i dont think i wanna mess with royal purple....i was talking to a machanic about that stuff and he told me that its not all that great for your engine...plus with the new cam that im putting in dont i need to use engine oil with more zinc in it?

Quote: Ill try the bosch 2 spark plugs

I've found from personal experience the Bosch line of plugs are garbage. And I've changed out enough of the +2s and +4s to know that no matter how many electrodes you put on a plug, it's only going to fire on one at a time!

I keep using ACdelco plugs, I haven't had any issues yet. AVOID "MAGIC SPARK PLUGS" (E3's Pulsefire, Bosch +Xs) like the plague. These spark plugs advertise stronger and hotter spark, but with the different resistance values in the plug it's very easy to wreak havoc on the electrical ignition components. Ends up compromising longevity for performance.

ACdelco #19238482 double platinum on the pricier side

or

ACdelco #19145283 for lower cost RapidFire

Both are very affordable on www.rockauto.com
