Tranny swap troubles

I have completed the swap from 700-r4 to the t-5. The car is running fine but I am confused when it comes to the speedometer. How can i get it to work. The tranny came out of a firebird and has a electronic connection while now in a camaro that has a cable operated speedometer. Pleas help wih possible solutions, i would like to keep the factory look of the dash in dealing with this. Also what is the cruising rpm in fith gear, I was guessing i was doing 55 @ 2300 rpm, does this sound right. Do i need to install a manual computer or is the old one fine. Thanks for the help.

Change your VSS to a manual speedo VSS... see if the one from your old tranny will work, if not its less than $30 at an autoparts store.

On my T5 in my 89 v6 bird I roll 60 mph at about 2100 rpm.

Like Drew said, look to see if the one from your auto tranny will fit. The speedo driven gear might not be the same though. New gears can be bought from the dealer. This is what the cable-driven T5 setup looks like. If the auto's looks like this then you are set.

When I did my swap I had the opposite problem, my tranny was setup for cable and the car was electronic.

As far as the computer chip is concerned, the car will run just fine with the auto chip. You may notice that the car will idle strange at times but it is not a major concern.

Hope this helps!

Is that a picture of the VSS or the housing. Mine from the 700r4 is a lot bigger than that. Can this be found at the parts store(if i need the housing) or is it a dealer part. Thanks for the help guys.

That is not a VSS. The piece on the right fits inside the piece on the left. The cable from your speedo then screws onto the whole thing.

I am pretty sure the dealer would have it but I am not sure about a parts store.

I got the VSS for my 91 at a parts store, was 1/2 the price of the dealerships same part, and took 2 days to get it... they also had the other two possibilities in stock.

I wonder what the years of those cars are... ?

Anyway, the VSS for the cable driven speedo's is on the back of the speedo. The trans holds a normal speedo gear that drives the speedo cable directly. The computer gets it's speed readout thru the following path: Trans tailshaft's speedo gear -> speedo cable -> speedometer -> VSS -> VSS signal wire -> computer

For the electronic speedos, the VSS was in the tailshaft. The computer got it's speed readout thru the following path: Trans tailshaft's VSS -> VSS signal wire -> speedomter -> computer

So, basically, the car's computer has nothing to do with the speedometer. If you really can't figure it out, you could probably install an electronic speedo... but I don't think it'd match your car, whatever year it may be.
