Good sounding exhaust for an '86 2.8 (if there is one?)!

I couldn't stand that V6 "tinny" noise out of the stock muffler, so everyone told me to get a Flowmaster, and it would sound a LOT better! I can't remember which muffler I got, but now it reminds me of a rice, and the "coffee can" mufflers you see on some!

I know that this will never sound like a V8, but can anyone tell me what to do to make it sound better?

Thanks
John

True duals will be as good as it gets. Use youtube and look around for ideas. I dont think you can really ever get away from the rice sound, nature of the beast i guess.

I have dual exhaust out of the muffler, think a flow master thing the PO put on but not sure. It definitely gives the car a certain nice growl

Mine had Pacesetter headers and y-pipe, a catco high flow converter and a dynomax catback. Sounded pretty good, didn't get that noise at all. True duals is pretty over kill for the V6, not to mention all custom exhaust, no kits available. You may actually lose power out of it due to lack of back pressure, unless you went with some pretty small diameter pipe. You also sacrifice ground clearance.

Flowmaster is a terrible choice for any car but even worse on a 6cyl. Dynomax and borla tend to sound decent on the 2.8 and 3.1. IF you get too much rasp you may need a resonator.

On my v6 all I have is a 36 inch cherrybomb through a 2.5 single mandrel bend exhaust with no cat. I dig the way it sounds

I was parting out a v8 so just swapped the muffler and got twin pipes, better flow and a better sound. Never going to be an 8 though.

Re: Good sounding exhaust for an '86 2.8 (if there is one?)!

I put a Borla cat-back on my 3.1 because I had it in the basement from when I took my 88 apart. The factory exhaust finally blew out on the car and I wasn't about to put another stock exhaust in it when I was planning an engine swap, so on it went.
It sounded good, IMO. A lot of people thought for a V6 it sounded pretty good. No rasp and it wasn't trying to sound like something it wasn't
