Help! Im loosing my mind! (3.1l not staring...)

Hi everyone!
This is my first post but i have been lurking on these boards for some time now and thanks for all the help already!

But now im stumped!
I have a 91 V6 3.1l that wont start!
Before i explain how it behaves i will list the things i have checked and/or changed

Battery: new
MAP sensor : new
Injectors: new
Spark plugs: new
Sparkplug wires: new
Rotor: new
Distributor: new
Fuel-filter: new
All fuses: changed
cleaned all the ground-points i could find
MotorOil: new
EGR: new
IAC: new
FIlled with new gas

I bought a ALDL-reader so if you need som info from that just ask for it!

I noticed yesterday that there was petrol in the motor oil so i changed it. I read that if you crank with petrol in the cylinders that can happen...

I got the engine to run a week ago when i changed all the sparkplugs. Is it possible that i wrecked the new sparkplugs already?

Last summer i had problems with the car just dying so i took the injectors out and realized three of them were bad so i changed all 6 just to be sure.

OK! Now for the weird behavior!
I can crank no problem but the engine does not start, it just sporadicly putts as if only one cylinder works.
This seems to be completely random the only time i know it will putt is if i wait for a few minutes and try to start it, at that time it putts 1 to 2 times then just cranks...
I tried to start it with starter spray but that backfired (literary...)
I took the spark plugs out and one of them was dry sooty, the other ones where sooty and wet with what smelled like petrol.

I have done other stuff but i cant remember them now...

Thanks for all the help, past and future!

sounds like vatts issue, if it has spark and fuel it should go(but it doesn't lol). It's probably your ignition being worn out.

is your firing order correct?

Well the security lamp starts and turns off just as it should...

I have the official GM repair handbook and i used that to put the ignition cables in the correct place both in the engine and distribution.

I think it's your key. When I got a my 91 RS it wouldn't start would just crank away. I changed the ignition cylinder & key and it started.

Check your firing order and your timing as well. Sounds like a timing issue.

Thanks for the tips!
Is there anyway to check the ignition cylinder?
Can i measure it in some way?

Is there a way to check timing without having the car running but just cranking?
Can i do that with a timing light?

Re: Help! Im loosing my mind! (3.1l not staring...)

I agree with maroe624, check your timing. usually(not always) backfires are timing issues. if your timing is correct, Burn the end of a plug clean/ get a new plug and test to see if you get a good strong spark. If not, it could be the coil being bad or the sensor under the rotor on the distributor(cant remember the name).

Triple check the plug wires on the distributor. Reminds me of when I had them all off by one position

Re: Help! Im loosing my mind! (3.1l not staring...)

I got it running!
Thanks for all the help!
Out of all the things you said the solution was broke91firebird:s tip to "Burn the spark plugs" Ive never heard about that before so i looked it up and did it!
I tried to clean the plugs with different solutions before but that just made it worse i guess...
Ive had problems with the car dying before so i will still check the VATS Thanks for the tip Jacobaxeman and Tuned Performance
