Just driving along wheeeeeennnnnnnn..........
2.8v6 1988 cruising at 60 . Backfires , dosnt respond to throttle and dies on a really bad road for this to happen , it woke me up quick that's for sure , got it going again , felt spot on then did the same again all the way to work like this . Raining today . Any quick checks clues would be appreciated. 😁

I'm guessing the backfire means I'm losing spark , if I make it home (25miles) I'll check in the dark tonight if I can , first time it's happened like this though. Nothings changed . At work now so nothing I can do .

Oh dear ! Hope it's not that what a pita that must have been ! I'm going through the ignition system , tidying up as I go to , a few small jobs I shoulda done . A quick test on the coil last night showed a probable fault. . . . . . It's funny cause I said to a friend the other day it's the last old part on the system , I should prob replace it , but it's working ! Doh !

I hope the coil fixes yours but honestly I don't know how all these wouldn't need a new tank by now.

Re: Just driving along wheeeeeennnnnnnn..........
The only time I've had my car just die at hwy speeds it has been the ignition control module in the distributor. I would replace the ignition control module, coil, and new distributor cap/rotor, wires/plugs... basically an over kill tune up. And put in a new fuel filter.
Its also possible the fuel pump is going if you have a gauge I would check pressure. I've looked inside my old tank when I replaced it with a plastic tank from a 2k last year and it was perfectly clean, but if yours has crude and rust in it then replace it.
