MY v6 3.1 POS
MY v6 3.1 POS
here is my saga from my camaro.
I have a 91 RS camaro v6 3.1 When i bought the car it was so i could go from my house to college in the mornings, then off to High school, then work then home. I was told about the car from a Seminary Teacher. My seminary teacher so he gives me all the info at seminary, brings that car to seminary lets the kids drive it.
well it's metallic blue with silver racing stripes. It looks great... because i didn't know anything about cars. So i talk to him, and i am told the only thing wrong with the car was the muffler had a hole in it, i asked about the tranny he said it was good.
Well i buy this car for 3600 he was asking 4000 i get it AS IS. i get in the car and under the passanger side. There is a paper that says that there are alot of metal shavings in the transmission pan.
i'm thinking.. dang i was lied too. only to find out, The struts and shocks are gone, my car was painted by maaco all the stickers on the car. Painted over. my car was red, with red rs rims, Spray painted over. Also i have a rust pocket starting on the top part of my coupe.
also, no horn buttons, the steering wheel jerks down. i also have a threaded nipple that had was leaking before i got the car. he failed to tell me about. and i have a split in my dash pad. So i go ask him for some help. cause he lied to me.. he says he'll drill a hole, and get a horn from radio shack. and make a horn that way.. and he didn't know about the rest.. he has sold cars to my friends also. i thought i was doing a dealing with a good man but i was wrong.
So i have a crappy car, that i have gotten to drive 5 times. thats it... it sits on the side of my grandma's house. I have the nipple replaced. and now the starter went out. so i have a nice list i have to complete.. and not alot of money.. So here is the list.. if any of you can help me out.. i'm to the point of breaking down.
1. Starter
2. Steering Wheel column
3. Sturts and Shocks
4. Muffler
5. Register the thing

Isn't there some lemon law or something? Well anyways, I think you paid too much for that car anyways. For the amount you paid him, I'd say you paid about Blue book. And with all that stuff wrong with it I would say to get a lawyer and get your money back. Always research a car and take it to a mechanic first. Sorry about the car though man.
You really should take that shmuck too court. If he really told you nothing was wrong with it though. Dont sit on this, the longer you wait the less likely you could get your money back.
I went down to Ill. to pick up this formula 350 I saw on the net. The guy said the car was good condition and it just needed a interior clean. I said I'd buy it, so I drove down to Ill. to pick it up, and this red-neck bastard lied also. This car was rustier than any f-body I have ever seen. The interior was sickening. There was so much wrong with the car I told him," this is not what you told me over the phone, I cant buy this!!" I gave the hick 50 bucks for the auto-trader add and my 2 friend and I laughed are asses off on the 175 mile ride home. Moral of the story dont trust anybody when it comes to cars and always bring someone who knows something about cars with you when you go to pick it up.
GOOD LUCK, BUT DONT WAIT TO DO SOMETHING, YOU MUST GET IT DONE SOON OR YOU WILL NOT HAVE A CHANCE OF GETTING ANY OF YOUR MONEY BACK!!

You bought the car, as is.
I'll bet he has your signature on it, too.
Two choices.
1 Eat the project your just bought and start feeding it money
or
2 Take him to court.
IN COURT you MUST PROVE that
He Lied (selling you a good condition car)
AND
What wrong with it (Need to take it to a mechainc and get paperwork to prove what's wrong with the car. IN FACT TWO MECHAINICS REPORTS will seal your deal in court).
You know where the guy works. Have him served there.
You know where he works, when you get the judgement, have his wages tapped to regain the funds from the sale.
DO NOT TALK TO HIM, UNTIL YOU GET MECHANIC PAPERWORK AND THE COURT PAPERWORK IS SERVED.
ALL you want him to do is take back car and you regain your cost of car purchase.
ANYTHING ELSE WON'T HAPPEN (this guy paying for mechaincs saying what's wrong & possibly towing costs, too)
Sorry.
Sucks.

Or get the guys from "Dirty Work" to pay him a visit

Sonofawitch- I just erased everything I typed. DAMN! Okay, what the hell did I write...
Uh.. okay- when you drove the car, did it shift strangely? Did it seem okay? By 1991, GM had pretty much perfected the 700r4 (that's the model # of your 4-speed automatic transmission), and they were pretty bulletproof. Any transmission will put metal shavings into the fluid pan, that's why there's a magnet inside the pan. If the owner had not been keeping up with yearly fluid/filter changes, the amount of metal filings might have looked like a lot. Where did you find this paper?
TIP for guys changing their own fluid/filter: When you get the old filter out of the trans, don't throw it away yet. Using a screwdriver or angled cutters, separate the metal part of the filter from the plastic body. Remove the filter medium, and unfold it. Metal collects inside here. If there's a few small piles (5-10 shavings each), you're okay. If there's a few large piles with large shavings, start saving $$ for a trans rebuild!
Why drill a hole for a horn if it seems all you need is a horn button? Go get one from a junkyard.
Does the steering wheel shake up & down, or is it the whole column? If it's the column, is it a tilt-adjustable column? If so, I bet the plastic piece underneath that holds the column to the dash has snapped. It's a common problem (and one reason why I'm glad I don't have a tilt column!) caused by people pulling on the wheel when they get in/out of the car. It could also be that the bolts holding the column to the dash have loosened, but it sounds like the plastic piece might be snapped. Search the thirdgen.org's message base archives for "tilt column" and you should find the info you need.
As to shocks/struts, you can do the shocks yourself. Go buy the Haynes 82-92 Camaro book, found at a Pep Boys or AutoZone or http://www.haynes.com or similar. It tells you how to do the job (and also talks about horn buttons & transmission fluid changes and etc). You can do struts yourself too, but you need more tools, and you need to get an alignment done afterwards. If it makes you feel better, any 82-92 Camaro (or Firebird!) should have had it's shocks/struts replaced by now!
This is probably the wrong place on the internet to ask about your threaded nipple.
Was it the water pump fitting?
As to the painted rims, go ask on the Body message board about removing the paint. I bet you can use a regular paint remover, but it might eat thru the clear coat that protects your rims from brake dust, so ask there first. That sounds like the typical Maaco $199 job. That's why, when I went to Maaco, not only did I do my own bodywork & prep, but I also masked off anything (including tailpipes w/aluminum foil!) that shouldn't be painted. If you guys ever see a Firebird with it's black bumper inserts painted the same color as the car, that's a Maaco job. As some help, if they painted the inside of the wheelwells too, fix that by spraying black paint (any kind, cheapest works good) under the wheel wells. Remove the wheels first, of course, to get under there to reach all the spots.
Where's the rust pocket?
Starter- two choices for cheap. Go to a junkyard first. Ask them to check the starter. You can do that yourself; if you're interested, you can search the V6 message board for info on it, or just ask. Option 2 is to find in the phonebook a number for a "Starter/Alternator rebuild shop". They can rebuild your starter (or give you a rebuilt one and take your old one as a "core" for them to sell to someone else) for cheaper than one you'd get at a parts store, and if the shop is reputable, it can last a lonnnng time.
Honestly, sounds like you're screwed with any legal action, and you obviously got suckered into paying quite a bit for it- but with a bit of wrench spinning, you can wind up with a good car. Don't be afraid to get dirty, you'll save money, can say that you did it yourself, and it sounds like you can't really make things worse, eh?
Isn't a Seminary something like a church? Maybe you can tell the church/community about this guy. I'm sure they wouldn't be too pleased with him.
Oh & next time, pay a mechanic to check the car out before you buy it. Or, if there's a friend who has a friend that knows about cars, slip him $50 to check it out.
