tune up questions
Hi all, I just got a FREE 89 RS with a 2.8 (yeah, but it was free). Anyway, the car has been sitting for a while (only 74,000 original miles) and needs some minor tune up help. I have been reading many articles recommending the Crane HI-2000 and PS91 coil. Also recommended were the MSD 8mm Heli-coil wires and Bosch platinum plugs. I have looked on the net and am looking for part numbers. Help me please! I know many of you must have these items, what part numbers are they? I am also looking for suspension help, nothing outrageous, I know it needs shocks and struts, any other recommendations. The car is great, I put new tires on it, yep, original ones were still on it. It has T-tops and the interior is in showroom condition. Unfortunately it is the dark red that faded badly. So paint is in the future. Where are the best places online to order parts like rim centercaps and embnlems? Whew, sorry for all of this, but I am getting my tax refund back soon and want to get this thing running better. Thanks
Jim

. Check oil for water contamination. read TomPs post on full tuneup :nono:
wait 5 mos and read my post on how much it cost to fix up my ride.
Look to year1, cruise the advertisers, e-bay, salvage yards.

Thanks, just e-mailed ya with the same request. I will check those and plan on the following:
changing all fluids
replacing all hoses and belts
plugs, wires
wipers, poss exhaust and cat
But as I said, it is a find (had to marry her daughter 14 years ago to get it, but it is worth it, even if it doesn't have a 5.7!) j/k

If you have the stock steel wheels I have the center caps.
I cant seem to find one (unless it is in my car) but I have at least two or three in perfect shape laying around the garage.

Use stock AC Delco plugs, MSD Direct Replacement Coil, Make your own MSD or Accel Wires and get a MSD 6A Ignition box. Take the uper plenum off and use throttle body cleaner on it, replace your fuel filter ASAP, change the oil, charge the battery, have the alternator tested, put a new thermostat in..

I don't think MSD makes 8mm wires anymore; they might, but I'm pretty sure they stopped. The MSD 8.5mm "Super Conductor" wires replaced that old 8mm HeliCore line, so it sounds like you had an old tech article. I myself would recommend the 6AL box with the Blaster SS coil... read thru http://www.summitracing.com 's catalog, or give them a call and ask for part #'s. Honestly, I wouldn't spend the bux for an ignition box first; they won't give much of an improvement... go for the dynomax cat-back #17493 (summit #WLK-17493) and make your own cold air intake.

Difference between the Blaster SS and Blaster, or Blaster SS and GM Direct-fit Blaster?
Just voltage & amperage; I e-mailed the tech guys at MSD a long time ago, before my girl bought me the 6AL box, and asked which coil (original Blaster, Blaster SS, or Blaster HVC) would be best for street use. They told me the Blaster SS. What I found cool was that they recommended the Blaster SS coil over the Blaster HVC coil- the HVC coil is $100! I love a company that doesn't care about price when making recommendations.
[edit] Oh, duh, you asked about mounting. I mounted the Blaster SS on a piece of 1/8" thick 2" wide steel, primered & painted black. As you know, I removed my a/c system. I bolted the bracket to the heater/evaporator box, and the coil sits upright on the metal bracket. The coil is placed right where the accumulator can was (silver air conditioning can on the passenger side).
For the previous coil, the Accel remote HEI computerized Supercoil, I made a bracket out of the same steel. I bolted the bracket to the top of the alternator bracket, using existing screws. The coil was placed between my alternator and my throttle body. Probably not the best spot for heat and vibration (thus the different spot for my new Blaster SS coil), but I had no problems at all with the coil.

@Tom:
I'm considering losing the A/C as well on my 2.8L Camaro. How much did you remove? I'm assuming I would need a certified bonehead to actually take the lines and such out. It has been dead for years and I don't care to spend the cash to get it all rolling again. It would be nice to streamline up under the hood by getting rid of all that mess. Also, what did you do for the absence of the compressor in the belt configuration?

Stuff to do.
Cheap suspension stuff, box the control arms and panhard bar, you'll notice a huge difference. For the front, a Strut towere brace or sub frame connectors. As for performance, a decent exhaust and the new hedders that just came out
