auto PROM into manual car......

i was talking with my professor today and he said that the PROM in manual cars actually makes the car run a little leaner than automatic cars........

he then said, for an increase in performance to get a PROM for an automatic car....................that will richen up the mixture a little bit and thus give a little more performance

it will also allow manual cars to let their RPM drop and not lag when shifted into nuetral (anybody know what i am talking about) thus probably saving some gas mileage

the only downside is that our shift light would not work correctly anymore..................................

any thoughts on the matter?

The 5 speeds all ready get better millage then the automatics. Not much just a coupl MPG. The bigest diference is on the highway.

What lag are you talking about. I don't experience this at all. When I coast a long in netural and then go back into gear my car picks right up with no lag ( I do this a lot to avoid stoping for a short red light).

ummmmm sorry lag was the wrong word

me and another dude in school both have V6 with T5's

what happens is the RPM take forever to drop when you put it into nuetral

this was done for a reason that i cant remember............

but with the auto chip, it should give us EVEN BETTER gas milage because the RPM's will drop like they should

it will also make the car run a little richer.................

anybody have a block learn chart for an auto car AND a manual?

Seems to me that would be bad for your engine. They gradually drop so that when you hit the next gear it will already be on it's way to that RPM basically (layman's terms). If you don't have that, your RPM's will DROP below where it would be in the next gear, then have to jump back up to the spot where they should be....thus resulting in more drastic changes to the engine RPM's that really aren't necessary.

Actually now that you brought that up it would cause detonation (lugging the engine). Not good at all. tell tale signs of lugging the engine are sparks plug. If the electrodes are blown off you need to adjust driving habits.

When I swapped a T5 in place of the 700R4, I left the auto chip in for a while. The idle characteristics are much different with the auto PROM. When pushing in the clutch, the engine speed used to jump aroung between 500 and 2K for a few seconds before gradually settling down to normal idle. This was really annoying and I am glad that it is gone.

For some reason, the brakes also felt differently with the auto PROM, the pedal was stiffer. I guess this would have to do with the amount of vacuum at idle, but I am not sure. I kinda miss the stiffer pedal but the brakes still work excellant.

As far as performance goes, I did not notice any difference between the two. The only performance increase is the major difference in weight between the two trannys. The auto weighed about 100lbs more. This probably accounts for the 5mpg increase after the swap.

I finally got my new clutch from Summit yesterday(only took 3mos.) so maybe I can get the car back on the road and do more "testing"

inside the dash... to access, remove the plastic cover that covers the underside of the dash of your car from the feet of your passengers...
