3.23's and 3.42's are what came in most V6's if not all.

I have been told the 4 cylinders came with 3.73's. You may want to swap a 4 cylinder rear in.

A V-6 manual came with 3.23 gears.

Welcome to the "dark side", 89formula4life!

Yeah man, if you can find an I-4 2.5l f-body in the junkyard, it's got a 3.73/open/drum axle! The '84 Camaro H.O. (says so on right of rear bumper) also came with a 3.73/open/drum. A few 82-85 Trans Am's and Z28's (engine code on vin (eighth digit) is "G", with a manual trans) came with the 3.73/posi/disc, which is what I swapped into my car.

BUT: Take it from someone who's been there, done that, and doing it again. Are you sure you want to go this way? So far, my $150 bargain has cost me upwards of $700- and is now costing me MORE, since the posi took a dump, I have to buy another axle. (Check out my "Ford Taurus!" message.)

I should've bought NEW 3.73's for $200, found axleshafts somewhere for $100 (overestimate), the SLP take-off for $100, and had it installed for $200. I'd probably be much happer, and would've only spent $600.

TIP: If you're into this kind of thing, I used http://www.por-15.com on my axle. I bought the POR-15 "Super Starter Kit, semi-gloss", and it had just enough to cover my whole axle. It made the axle look brand new; I recommend it. For $20, it was well worth it- and it brushes on perfectly! It's so "thin" that you don't need to spray it, and the brush lets you cover every little bit of rust.

TIP2: Replace the rear wheel bearings & seals while the axle's on the ground. You'd have to take the axleshafts out to change the differential to the SLP unit anyway!

From what I understand Berlyn, You have 3.23's. I heard only the 5 speeds have 3.42's. But I could be mistaken. See, I tested mine kind of, someone on this board told me to ride my car in 4th (5speed) until 70 and read the rpms. It was around 3230. Which means from what the guy told me I have 3.23 gears. If I had 3.42 gears the rpms should have been around 3420 rpms. You see what I'm saying? I guess the 4th gear in five speed cars are a 1 to 1 ratio. I don't know how to check in auto cars. Sorry I couldn't help you too much.

Yep automatic transmission cars came with 3.23 and 5 speed 3.42. The 3.42 I have in my firebird came from an 88 or 86 (I forget) 5 speed I have an extra 3.42 open just in case. Some auto Z28's like my old one 5.0/carb came with a stock 3.42 posi drum brake system. Very nice but very rare.

I used the hammer finish paint for a base coat on my rear end build then painted the shafts black and the center section polished aluminum color, looks .
