im makin a homeade cold air intake
im makin a homeade cold air intake
i was lookin on www.firebirdv6.com and they have complete directions for making a homeade cold air intake. i printed them off and today i went and got some of the supplys to make it. alls you need is a 3" pvc pipes 1 90* elbow, 1 45* elbow and a 3" straight pvc pipe exactly 9" long and a 3" k&n cone shaped air filter # RE-0810. i got all the pvc pipes today. ill get the k&n prolly this commin week and put it on ill keep postin as i go
Here's what ya get.
MORE FRESH AIR BLOWING INTO THE AIR INTAKE.
When do you get the fresh air horsepower?
When you pass someone.
That is truly the only way you can tell.
You cannot add this HP while sitting still.
I made similar.
I get more air directed from bottom below bumper (curved thru fender) & air straight shot at the headlight area.
I also removed my air silencer box, replaced with Dryer heat outlet hose.
Works.
Hokey.
I know I have more air. Dirty filter.
With my 3.4, tho, I notice no true passing difference. No increase in noise, either.
I'm sure it helps, tho.
Other way to tell.
1/4 Mi times before & after.

The only thing I don't like about that intake: There's nothing really holding the TB hose to the first section of PVC pipe- except electrical tape. For mine, I used a 3" piece of mandrel-bent exhaust pipe, which allowed me to keep the clamp on the end of the TB hose. Then I used one of the rubber PVC "flex couplers" from Home Depot to connect the exhaust pipe to the MAF sensor (85-89 2.8 cars). 'Course, the pipe ran me $35..

Explain, please.
Thanks

yea, that description actually sounds EXACTLY like mine. TomP is right. There is nothing holding the 90* exlbow to the TB, but mine is yet to fall out, and I am not even using electrical tape. As for gains, I did it so long ago I couldn't even tell you. BUT, you can hear it sucking the air in like crazy (a howling sound) and your exhuast note will drop a bit. Plus my filter gets crazy dirty. Worth the effort, cheap, and an improvement over stock no doubt.

Yep, you can find all kinds of couplers there. The MAF is a 3" inlet/outlet, so I picked up the 180 degree "J-bend" mandrel bent pipe, made by Hooker, from Summit. I cut it in half to get a tighter 90 degree bend than I would've if I cut a "180 degree U-bend" in half. So the 3" pipe meets exactly with the 3" MAF; and the rubber coupler solved the connection problem.
I should've mentioned how my TB connects... I scored a TB hose from a 2.8 MPFI Camaro out of a junkyard. The Camaro TB hoses are circular at the end, not that huge damn oval like the Firebird ones. Since the Camaro TB hose connects right onto the outlet of the 3" MAF, it's able to connect right onto my 3" exhaust pipe. Here's my system:
TB
Camaro TB-to-MAF hose
3" mandrel-bent 90 degree exhaust pipe (that I never painted, haha)
Rubber coupling
MAF
Rubber coupling
flex tubing
K&N "big" cone filter, I forget the part #, but it was $40.

My set up is
throttle body
90* bend from something (swap meet $1 item). The rubber fits the TB perfect & tight.
Into the flex dryer hose
MAF w/bend for Firebird
Air cleaner.
Almost wish I had the factory air box with the air inlet on the side.
I'd plumb my ground level air fed tube to taht inlet.

Where the filter meets the ducting I ran to it below the car:
About half of the filter was stuck down inside the ducting.

V6camaroman...here is my setup. It is pretty much exactly what you found at that website. Same filter, same pipes, etc. Howver, this is my 1990 3.1 w/o a MAF....anyone with a MAF needs to make modification like TomP. The next step is to box in the filter on three sides (radiator side, coolant bottle side, and on the top) in order to block out extra engine heat (thanks Ked85). As you can see the filter is filthy, i clean it about every 6 months, but the system works great. You can HEAR it work...its crazy. Anyway, its was dirt cheap. And I opted to do it this way because I didn't want to start hacking holes in the frame to tuck the filter away, and I didn't want to remove my foglights. The IAC sensor is screwed into the PVC under the 45* bend and made the whole with a paddle bit on a drill.
PS - Don't mind the engine bay. Winter in CT is finally over so its filthy...plus I am in the middle of a conversion from black to red electrical tubing.

CHD....yea, i am hoping one of my summer projects after i get her re-painted is to move the battery and incorporate that Y-pipe you have on yours. for 100.00 (battery kit & filter) it seems like a no brainer. then i will enlcose both filter to block off excess engine heat.
