Spare tire replacement

Hey there guys,
I hope anyone reading this can help me out on a problem with my camaro's spare tire.
I have an '89 iroc-z with the 5.7 TPI motor. This January, one of the tires went flat...no biggie. When I went to change the wheel, I used the cylinder to inflate the spare/compact tire.

The tire inflated unevenly and was bulging at different points. Needless to say, it drove very wobly. My brother, who was driving behind me, said the tire looked as if it was about to come off of the wheel.

I took no chances and parked the car and simply took the flat tire to be replaced (Yup, it needed it).

The following day I called several tire centers and was told that the spare is a dealer-specific item. After having called the dealer, they told me that it was discontinued.

I've been driving since then with no spare. I really don't want to carry a full-size spare because of the Bose sound system. I'm sure it'll get in the way.

Any help is appreciated!

According to post 19 and 21 of the following link, a fourthgen spare will fit:

Re: Spare tire replacement

I have the collapsed spare and was wondering if anyone actually used theirs. This answered my question. But it sounds to me like this is a lousy spare. I guess I'll just hope I never need one.

Re: Spare tire replacement

Mine did the same thing when inflated. I think that they are so old, and been compact for so long, they just started to deform. If you buy another, inflate to check, and hope you can get it back to deflated shape.... fix a flat is messy, but is an option... and with a 12v air cimpressor, a bit smaller than spare tire...

No need.

The Space Saver spare fits inflated in the right rear area intended in all the 3rd Gens I’ve seen and have.

Happy Racing!

Re: Spare tire replacement

I thought the 1LE with the aluminum rim came flat, & a canister of gas to pump it up when needed.

Re: Spare tire replacement

it sounds to me like the canister was low on air ... my spare inflater all crazy like that too.
as old as it is, i was afraid to put much air into it and it was all misshapen and crazy looking, but after the 5th time i got scared and let all the air back out of it i just said f*** it and went for it ... once i got it to full psi, it was fine (was glad i didn't need it though, one that old scared the crap out of me) i just needed to have one for a road trip i was going on and didnt want to be stuck on the side of the road with nothing

Re: Spare tire replacement

I run gto spare wheels with m&h front runners as my drag skinnies. Work great and clear 13" brakes! Perfect spare for guys with brake upgrades

Since i got two i can keep one as spare for my iroc and one in my 4th gen as spares that are lighter than factory

Re: Spare tire replacement

Heads up = Do not run your car with a donut tire in the rear if you have a posi unit. It will rotate at different speeds and is very hard on any clutch pack unit. I'm not sure about the lockers.

Re: Spare tire replacement

I believe the tire on the gto stuff is full size once inflated. I know my 4th gen factory one was, i drove it with donut on rear just fine

Re: Spare tire replacement

I have a 92 convert and tried my spare. It was all over the place. Apparently the age is the reason so I don't see any sense buying an old spare to replace it. Has anyone found a tire that could be mount to the spare's rim? We know the rim has the right clearances since the front and rear wheels are different. I would like to put a fresh tire on there (even if fully expanded/inflated) rather than using another older tire (gto).

Re: Spare tire replacement

It doesn't seem like 5 years ago that I started this topic! Lol

I went with a 4th gen Camaro spare, as they are more readily available than 04-06 GTO spares.
