Orr89RocZ 6le designs has a nice rear panel black with difusers for 4th gen Trans Am/Firebird/ Firehawk. Black rims look aswsome if done right.

Re: What's the deal with black wheels?
i think one of the years of corvette came blacked out, and i guess everyone has tried to copy the look ever since.
that or... blacked out just.. looks cool (sometimes).
the yamaha R1 raven for example is blacked out, very popular bike. anything in black is popular. not 100% sure why, but it seems to be

I never got to powdercoat my wheels before a firetruck ran me off the road and caused me to smack my oil pan and knock my oil pump pick out. After a rebuild my 454 into a 496 I'll definately join the black wheels/serial maniac club!

Re: What's the deal with black wheels?
Ty, Yep Satin. i had it full flat and it didnt look the way i wanted. its base coat clear coat so the paint wont chalk or rust through like primer will, i have seen some people clear over primer and that didnt look half bad.
The wheels are "Aero 50 Series" 15x10 with a 6" offset, i had to take a air hammer and mold the fenderwell to fit the big hoosiers. Other then that with a diffrent tire you might slide, i was really happy with the way they tucked, theres more pictures in my build thread of diffrent angles.
To actually answer the question that started this... " why people have flat black rims " is easy...
by the time i bought my car it was already out dated... it had been in storage and was rough to put it lightly. the first thing i did was sand it down and primer it black. the rims were grey... and saw more curbs then the bottom of a skate board. so i cleaned those up the best i could and panted them ( yes with a rattle can ). it was a quick, cheap and easy way to get them to look more decent then what they were. eventually the flat black everything was a little much and i moved on to actually painting the car ( when i could afford it ) and got chrome rims.
id like to say weve all been there, but some are better off then others. depending on the rest of the car flat wheels can make it or break it... same with the paint, theres work making flat look good. he probibly sprayed them black to make them look better then they did so he could sell the car, flat paint hides dent and dings especially on a set of curb beat wheels. lol

I've had these wheels on my car for a while. I'm getting tired of them, but when the car is cleaned up, they look good.

Re: What's the deal with black wheels?
here are my wheels redone...these are my stock rims powdercoated black and polished lips.... i will have pics of them on the car very soon.. my gta is flame red and my interior is black and my windows are 20 percent tint all around and all lights except headlights are tinted also.. so the gold rims looked out of place... Black gta rims FTW...

Yes, because foreign wheel manufacturers don't export. I'm sure if you gave them the money for the wheels and the freight costs, you'd have Belgium wheels.

The only other firebird formula I've seen that looks this Badass from the 3rd gens is painted in silver with black contrast such as the wheels, t-tops, rear spoiler, and the black rubber from the bumpers with twin dual Chrome Exhaust tips

black wheels all the way... my gta rims were gold but now they are powdercoated black..i think my gta looks alot meaner black than with gold gta rims.. i cant stand gold gta wheels.... black wheels look very good if your interior is all black to match...

Re: What's the deal with black wheels?
one day I will fine someones extra golds (maybe all fronts? do they are deeper offsets and can rotate... I can dream right?) for a song and powder coat them

If I were you I would get the black lug covers on your wheels.. it would look great! chrome lugs mess up the look
Re: What's the deal with black wheels?
Just notice that this is the first time I have logged in since 2006. Dang time flies.
For those who think it is a fad nothing could be further from the truth.
Anybody remember when the ronal r9 wheels became popular in the '80s on third gens?
Then people took it one step farther and started doing the monochromatic look and painting the wheels body color?
I had a '84 Z28 H.O. In dark silver with charcoal ground effects and charcoal painted wheels with machined faces and optional Blackwall Goodyear eagle gt tires. It came that way from the factory and was hot as crap looking.
Black wheels look especially good with silver cars for a great contrast.

I don't remember. I got them used from a friend of mine. Usually they retail for between $50 and $75 a wheel.

I am not a fan of solid black wheels. The ones with some polished metal to them such as in post 364 or a little further down with the GTA wheels look a lot better to me than solid black.

I like the rims on the green camaro. Black rims just look wrong. Doesn't matter if they're flat black, gloss black, power coated black, black with a chrome lip they just cheap. IMO

Yet if I say I find the gold GTA wheels cheap and tacky knockoffs of BMW wheels of the 80s I get a backlash... and thats OK.. They look like pimp wheels.
No one will come to my defense... or get after those who disagree and disparage me.

I never said their view is invalid.. if you read.. I said ...basically.. do these look cheap?

If your question is... basically... do these look cheap? then the answer is yes... yes they do. Sorry, my opinion

Re: What's the deal with black wheels?
let's see... a wheel from the 80's (which is an evolution from a design from the early 70's) looks like a european wheel from the 80's. Not following you there.

yes the 80s BMWs came with BBS wheels. it was the style.. hence when the GTA came out they wanted it to have a European flair... they put paddle mirrors on it and BBS style wheels like BMWs had... I hate GTA wheels for that reason. they were muscle/performance cars that had a distinctive look yet wanted to be something they wernt. Their name GTA came stood for ( "Gran Turismo Americano"
The car that became the prototype for the GTA was this:

which was a 86TA.
I had the same idea (to remove striping along the lower part above the ground affects) on my 86 TA back in 86. this was my car in 86:
If you note, my current wheels of my GTA are very similar...
If I had gold wheels on it it would look like crap to me. if it had silver wheels it wouldnt look right on a black and gold car.. silver just looks out of place when you have the gold emblems etc. that is why I chose the blacked out look and I get compliments for my junky wheels wherever I go.. odd. even won second place for all firebirds (30 in al) in *stock class* at a show that had 1500 cars of all types attend. My wheels are period correct being from a pristine 88 formula.
you can the BMWs with our style wheels here. they were not intended to be extensions of snowflakes from the 70s....:

Re: What's the deal with black wheels?
I'm not buying it. You are talking about styling cues that have been pontiac staples all the way back to the 70's.
I guess you see a split grill on a grand am and accuse them of stealing from BMW too?

The pictures that BADNBLK posted have more detail. you can the the center hub, the rim, and the calipers behind the wheels. Makes a huge difference. I'd have those wheels on my car in a heartbeat

I love the look of the stock Formula rims on Missmy86ta's car. I'm not a fan of those wheels stock but they look killer painted up black and I usually hate all black stock wheels. I agree the gold gta rims remind me of Daytons lowrider rims, I love a cool lowrider just don't want my gta to look like one.

They are a 18x9 & 18x10 ROH DriftR wheel. They come with a machine "polished" lip, but I customer ordered them with a polished lip.
