Are these tires a stretch??

After doing my homework, Including a thorough search of this forum, i have chosen a wheel and tire package.

Front - 17x8 wheels, 4.5 inch backspace with 245/45 17 tires

Rear - 17 x 10 wheels, 6 inch backkspace with 275/40 17 tires.

Question - some things I read say that the 275/40 17 tires are not quite large enough for the 10 inch wheels, anybody have any hands on experience with this combo before I pull the trigger on tire purchase?
Much Appreciated

Where did you read that? The typical recommended range is a 9"-11" wheel.

Why only a 8" w/245 up front?

Re: Are these tires a stretch??

I am running 17x8 with 245/45/17 on front and 17x9 with 275/40/17 on the rear, so it is a good combo. Only thing is my front tires rub at about 3/4 of full lock, which is really annoying.

Re: Are these tires a stretch??

Stephen....I came across a set of Boyd Coddingtons at a price that was too ridiculous to pass up. They included the 8's and the 10's. The tire sizes were the best I could figure for original height and they are also within a couple hundredths of each other when mounted. Any other suggestions would be welcome as far as tire sizes, but the wheels are a done deal already.....Thanks for your reply. As far as where I read that, I did a Google search and that info turned up in a Musatng forum......go figure

Are you lowered any, or stock height? I have not messed with the suspension yet, probably won't due to where I live and the roads here. 62K miles and been through 3 airdams already.

Re: Are these tires a stretch??

A 275 on a 10" wheel isn't a stretch by any means but a 275 is usually run on a 9" wide wheel. I think a 285 would probably be squared off a little better.

My car is stock height with those wheels. Honestly the rubbing on the front is getting unbearable. Whats the backspacing on the wheels you got?

Backspacing on the 8 inchers for the front is 4.5 inches, same as the original IROC wheels. The wheel/tire combo height is also within a couple hundredths of what I have now, never rubbed at all. Do you have any idea what exactly they are rubbing on? I am curious now.

Saw the thread, wow that would be irritating. I will keep an eye on this one for a while and see where it goes. Haven't bought tires yet, car is in storage for the winter. I like my new wheels so much I would probably use a torch to make 'em fit if I have to!!!

By the way, thanks to everybody for the good info.
