Wheels question

I posted this on the GTA site, but thought I would ask others who are not obsessed with gold wheels...
I am thinking of doing one of the following. Please give me your thoughts. I have perfect gold cross laces from my GTA with about 20K miles on them. I currently am using formula wheels powdercoated black as you see below

1. Powdercoat them black like the optional TA wheels of the era.
2. Sell them to one of you and use the proceeds to buy aftermarket black. How much could I get for them? Keep in mind they are flawless.
3. Keep the gold ones and forget the whole thing

Yes, I really hate the Gold wheels of GTAs They look like BMW wheels of the era. I guess that was the whole idea since the GTA was to have european flair... But I hate them. In black they dont look so bad

Re: Wheels question

Have the crosslaces redone in black? With any wheels, I prefer the polished lips to the solid black you have now. Looks too much like junkyard steelies, despite the obvious difference to the centers.

Re: Wheels question

I will start off by saying that I dont like any black wheels unless they're steelies so that will sway my opinion. That being said, you obviously don't like the stock wheels much and they are pretty popular so I say sell them and get a set you actually like in the colour you like (whatever it may be). You'll be much happier in the long run.

Re: Wheels question

ok... well.. the wheels I have on it now are stock 3rd gen wheels for a firebird formula. I powdercoated them black and they are pristine. I really dont care what any of you think about my current wheels since that is not what I am asking about. Considering with my Junkyard wheels it won 2nd place against 50 other Firebirds of all generations including a low mile TTA in a 1500 car classed show last summer, I couldnt care less what you feel about itts current look. My question was between selling my perfect gold GTA rims and buying black repos, recoloring the current gold ones or keeping the golds. Attached are what my car looked like with Golds and what it would look like with blacks.

Re: Wheels question

I wasn't actually refering to the formula wheels but rather to the GTA wheels. And I appriciate that you don't care if I like black wheels or not because its your car and you should have it look the way you want it to. I was just warning that my opinion is a little biased. When I read your OP I thought you didn't like the GTA wheels because "they look like BMW wheels of the era". And in black you said they "dont look so bad" which I took (possibly out of context) as them not looking exactly how you want. If those are the wheels you do want, don't sell the gold ones to get repros in black. You will most likely loose money going that route. Don't keep them gold either since you don't like the gold. Paint or powdercoat the centers black yourself and save some money.

Re: Wheels question

sitting still, the black center/polished lip gta's look really nice. want a set for myself. the gta rims do seem to get a decent amount of money (since a lot of us stock with 15's like to go bigger).

i've been checking around on my local craigslist and see good ones going for between $200-400 depending on condition. may be worth seeing what's in your area for going rate. shouldn't be too hard to find the black ones you want and i'm sure someone'll be happy to grab the gold ones from you.

no worries. Its impossible to convey tone through the written word. It seems you were given a hard time on a nother forum about the same topic so it's understandable. I'm actually thinking about changing the look of my GTA wheels too. The thing to remember is that they can be repainted so it doesn't hurt to try another colour (or in my case less).

Re: Wheels question

I'm not usually one for stock wheels, but I think the Formula's look awesome in black like you've got them. I say stick with what you've got unless you HAVE to have something new.

Re: Wheels question

earthier way the GTA rims with the polished lip look MUCH better then your current ones imo, up to you on the color if you want factory rims or you could go aftermarket with something completely different up to you

Re: Wheels question

I have had a set of gold "GTA" style rims.
They are a p.i.t.a to keep clean, just goes with the style of rim, regardless of what color.
Sell them to some numbers correct nut for some good cash.
Get the rims you want.

I like the powdercoated formy rims, It is different and goes with that total blackout look.

I have a set of black center T/A rims on my '89 formy - they are still a p.i.t.a. to clean.

BTW:
The gold center GTA rims were not exclusive to GTA's.
91 and 92 convertibles with tan tops came with gold center rims.

Refinished wheels will last for many years providing you take care of them.
