Staggered tires sizes for my 91 Z28
Staggered tires sizes for my 91 Z28
Here are the tires I am going with for my 91 Z28 project.
18X8.5 fronts (25 inches tall 8.5 wide tire)
19X10 rears (27.5 inches tall 11.5 wide tire)
What do you guys think? I will post pics tomorrow of them installed on the wheels, but it will be awhile before they are mounted on the car as it is in the process of being tubbed.

I may be mistaken but that tire set up will contribute to the over all stance/rake ,that will move the front valance lower and the rear higher giving it that grag/1/4 mile look. I guess that's what your looking for with the "tubbs".Cant wait to see them on the car.

I was trying to lower the rear of the car so some of the tire sticks up into the fender. It has adjustable coilovers on the rear and also I will have adjustable shock mounts.

Re: Staggered tires sizes for my 91 Z28
you need to put the wheels on the car, front and back, and get a high quality shot of the whole side of the car, upside down. I found that just great
Re: Staggered tires sizes for my 91 Z28
I tried, I can't get far enough away to get the whole car in the shot. Anyways there was alot more rot than I thought in the car. I cut the whole floor out, the driveshaft tunnel, the truck and the inner rear wheel wells. I turned the car from a unibody into a framed car. I plated the front subframe with 1/4" steel to strengthen things up. I was even thinking of turning the t-tops into a 1 piece targa top, but I don't think I have the patience for that. The roll cage will be welded onto the frame that got made. Also going to run some more steel down the inside edge of the rockers. I don't think I will be needing the subframe connectors any more
I am pretty much outta money now, so things will be going slow from here on in....

sounds like a cool project
Re: Staggered tires sizes for my 91 Z28
Expensive too! I paid $385 for a stinger fibreglass bumper, cost me $1200 to get it from Florida to B.C. and took 2 months for it to clear the border!!! I need a rear impact beam too, but can't find a place that is willing to ship to canada! Anyway got some pics of the rotisserie and how the project is progress from start to now. I am going to start a thread in the Fabrication section....

Re: Staggered tires sizes for my 91 Z28
I'm not a fan of having rear tires with an overall diameter over 1" larger than the fronts - makes the car look like the 70's rejects that those of us who had third gens in the 80's avoided.
But your idea of having a lot of rubber in the rear is sound - especially with the kind of power you are putting out; a good thing. Why not a 315-30-18 rear tire on an 11" wide wheel?

Re: Staggered tires sizes for my 91 Z28
I had a tough time dealing with the local wheel shops. They couldn't seem to wrap their heads around the idea of what I was trying to accomplish and when I contacted wheel manufacturers they took me for some bum off the street and wouldn't deal with me seriously. It took two weeks for the tire shop just to find a tire that was the same tread and model front to back (even if the rear tire is an SUV tire). I still might go bigger down the road, but these wheels was all I could come up with for now. People don't seem to understand that I would modify the car to fit the wheel, not finding a wheel that fits the car!

Re: Staggered tires sizes for my 91 Z28
do you mind explaining in detail the electric brake booster set up you plan to use? Sounds very interesting.
Re: Staggered tires sizes for my 91 Z28
Well basically it is an electric vacuum pump that makes vacuum for your brakes. Extreme cams and some forced induction engines don't make enough vacuum to operate your brakes efficiently. I bought it before I realized that there were vacuum ports on top of the blower and under the carbs. I am using 1 port for the torque convertor lock up kit and the other for who knows what. I still intend to use the vacuum pump.
