Right front wheel rubbing after 4th gen wheel install
So i just installed new 17x9.5 zr1 wheels.
It is now rubbing on the right hand front side on some sort of ball joint.
Any idea why this is?
ONLY on the right side. Ican upload pics if necessary

you have spacers, are they the same? measure and make sure
any other suspension work?
its possible the steering arm is bent, but i really doubt it.

Re: Right front wheel rubbing after 4th gen wheel install
I just put on the Hawks third gen wheel spacers.
theyre designed for this application.
Ive always noticed that when making right turns, say into a parking lot, the front end kind of hops.
Maybe thats a sign?
I dont know, its kind of beyond me!

so are the wheels rubbing, grinding the wheel, or is the front end just hopping when turning tight and slow, because thats normal.

That the scrub effect of our cars that is designed into the front suspension (kind of a flaw, really). The wider the wheels get, the worse it will scrub. There are ways to 'fix' this but that requires a ton of adjustable pieces and fiddling with SAI and IA at an alignment shop for hours for such a minimal thing.

Re: Right front wheel rubbing after 4th gen wheel install
what's your total wheel backspacing (wheel + spacer)? if it's more than, say appx five-and-a-quarter inch (5-1/4"), then IMHO, you're in the danger zone with the C4 ZR1 17x9.5" wheels.
I presume your pass side wheel rubbing is occurring only on steering wheel all-the-way-over right turns?

Re: Right front wheel rubbing after 4th gen wheel install
take the wheels off, and swap the spacers to the opposite side, see if that helps.
while its apart, measure the thickness of the spacer and the backspacing of the wheel and see what they are. If something is different between the two, it will become apparent.
If they all measure the same, you would have a bent steering arm, if thats what rubbing, but you seem to have some contradicting info here.
take a picture of the tie rod to tire clearance if you can. And while you are down there, how much room do you have to the tie rod on the side that does not rub?

Re: Right front wheel rubbing after 4th gen wheel install
My son put some wide spacers and 4th gen camaro/corvetter type 17" wheels/tires on his 91 RS. The left fron wheel barely rubbed that lip that sticks out from the strut (about 1/4 to 3/8" up from the lip of the wheel). A couple of passes with an angle grinder took a 1/4" off that lip and no more rubbing.

Re: Right front wheel rubbing after 4th gen wheel install
Thanks for all the help everyone!
Got it all to workout, ended up putting the wrong spacers on the front...
Anyway, It worked out and heres a video of what it looks like now.

I think its a good look, still getting used to the handling aspect

Re: Right front wheel rubbing after 4th gen wheel install
i had the same problem. i had switched out the right tie rod end and the replacement was quite a bit thicker on than the original. my ZR1's were rubbing/grinding pretty bad on it. i used the little spacer used for the rear tires on the front. problem solved...
