In need of new tires

I am the proud new owner of an '89 vert with 30k miles on her. I am looking to replace the tires and would like some of your opions about the tires you are running. If you like them or not and why? The car has Michelin Sport XGT's on it now and they are noisy and feel rough until warmmed up. I am told that they have poor wet traction but I don't intend to run her in the rain. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Rich'sRed89

It depends on what the car's intentions are. Are you going to race it or are you just going to cruise (my prediction) with it?

It is just a cruiser with a little bit of spirited driving in the twisties.

I would say to get the quietest set of all season tires that will fit. You will probably have to go/call a tire shop for convenience.

Re: In need of new tires

The 245-5-16 size is becoming very scarce these days - at last count there were only 13 street worthy tires available and only 3 of hose are considered high performance street tires.

Re: In need of new tires

Remember, the original poster's car is just a cruiser. He may not need a large selection of tires. Or, 225/50R16 is the next best tire size.

The tires I have on my camaro (just acquired) are a mismatched set of all season tires that do ok for daily driving. They would get exposed if I tried to use them on an autocross course.

Re: In need of new tires

I put a set of firestone firehawk wide oval tires on my 91 Z28 this summer. I'm running 17in rims but they do make these tires in a 245/50/16 according to the firestone website. They are very smooth, quiet, and didn't require much weight for balancing. I was impressed with the performance for the cost, perfect for a good handling weekend cruiser in my opinion.

I've been considering the A/S version of these tires. Does anyone have any experience with them? There aren't many reviews on tire rack that I can find. Especially ones that are relevant to an F-Body car.

Re: In need of new tires

x2 on the wide oval tires. why bother getting all seasons, or something smaller than the 245/50/16? ive had them for two seasons now and really like them. my first choice would have been nitto 555 or something but they have been discontinued a few years ago in the 245/50/16.
