Wheels and TiresNeed help with wheels or tires? Got fitment issues? Have questions about tire performance and handling? Ask all of those questions here!
Hi all, as im attempting to get my TA to handle well ive sorted the suspension side of things and have now turned my hand to the wheels and rubber. Ive found the 17x8's which im putting on with some extremely sticky 245/45/17 AD08r's.
Here are the wheels and im making some bowlingball hubcaps to fit.
Here is a quick photoshop of what he'll look like with the wheels and cap fitted.
That’ll look nice... One of those things that’ll take a minute for people to notice... hmmmm why does this car look a little extra cool? Then you point out the 17” wheels and fatter tires...
I’m probably going to pick up the IROC 88-90 replica 17” wheels this winter and store my factory originals...
What tires are you going with? I wanted to go Goodyear as a nod to the factory gatorbacks, but BF Goodrich seems to have some good offerings in that size...

Ive gone for Yokohama AD08r's as i got a great deal on them and they are super sticky (i'll hopefully do a few track days)
That is a very good idea, Im looking for bigger brakes on my car and interested in ditching my 15's if this would work, did you get them mounted on car? I was wondering how you were able to attach them to the rim?
Still wanting to know if you made a set of hubcaps work with those rims? Im really wanting to upgrade brakes since the ls swap and not finding any upgrades that fit with 15" turbocast rims.
Hi, sorry for the delay in replying. Yes ive miunted them but they are back off while I do bodywork. Rather than turning a lip on the wheels (which was my first idea) I have cut a small cut on the back of the caps for each fin to slot into which keep it very secure and stops it slipping around. Then ive got zip ties mounted on the back that go through the spokes.
Went for a test drive and all good. Felt so much more planted with the 17" wheels. Looking forward to FINALLY being back on the road for good.
Thanks for the update. These projects can take forever but glad to hear you didn't give up on them. Notching around every spoke must have took a while to accomplish but I think its a great idea so they are snug. I would think 4 of them heavy duty zip ties would hold them on tightly. Definitely get some pics of backside of hubcaps and finished product.
The link for the rims doesn't work anymore. I searched ebay for bmw rims but none look like those pictured. Do you have any information on them or what cars they were made for?

You should search for WHEELS, since that's what they are...
Actually wheels are the rim and tire combo. A rim is a part and tire is a part when the 2 come together its a wheel assembly.
No, they're not. A tire is not part of a wheel. It gets mounted on the wheel. The rim is part of the wheel, and by itself is useless since it cannot be mounted on the car without the rest of the wheel. The exception to this would be some old Pontiacs and VWs...
Thanks for the lesson and contributing to the thread but back to the subject and a question for the op. Are those a factory bmw rim? Or aftermarket? Ive searched and nothing matches those fins like in your pictures. Hopefully they are still available because this is the best looking option I've saw as of yet.
Hi all, its been going very slowly with putting KITT back on the road but ive made a discovery with the wheels. I am now using 16x8 wheels with a set of hubcaps that look identical to Turbocast rims.
Here is a little video of my options and what I finally went with. Hoping the car is up, running and painted by the end of this summer.
Thats a no.
But not hard to do:
Bmw uses 5x120 so you need wobble nuts.
I think they have a ET of 35(?) so you need spacers
The ET number is close to the same offset of 4 gen or Corvette wheels
