BFG comp 2’s VS General Gmax RS?

Need to replace the 10 year old BFG’s on the formula. I hear some good things about these GMAX RS’s. Tire rack’s comparison shows quicker lap times. Has anyone tried both? Curious to hear experiences. Use would be in a dry hot climate with no rain.

hard to beat the BFG, and if you're still on a 245-50/16 (which I admire by the way) ,,,,lap times probably aren't your number one priority. I'm a big fan of the BFG. Still....can't say one way or another about the General. Might be every bit as good.

Re: BFG comp 2’s VS General Gmax RS?

Aren't the BFG's out of production? I tried getting some when I put on my 17's last fall and couldn't find some anywhere. I've looked several times since and still not found any, although it's been a few months so maybe they are back but your decision might have been made for you. If they are around, I have had several sets of SC2's on several different cars and loved them. So if they ARE available, get them.

I got a set of General Gmax's for my yellow '85. Really nice tire. Basically a modern performance tire in our size.

I was between the general and bfg, went with bfg 275 40 17 on my formula. 1st thing I noticed was it had a super soft sidewall compared to the old f1s they replaced. Will probably be going a different route next time.

They're not on Tire Rack at all now, and they were listed as "out of stock" when I had to buy tires last year. Sucks, they were great tires. Can't stand the Riken Raptors I have now, very little traction compared to the BFG Comp-2 A/S's that I had before, both wet and dry.

92-Formula,
I'm sort of in the same boat as you. I just picked up a very low mile (10,151) '88 IROC still sporting the original Gatorbacks it drove of the dealer showroom with. I'm trying to decide between the Comp 2's and Gmax RS's. I won't be doing any road course racing or auto crossing...just spirited cruising.

My most important criteria is getting something that looks and sits like the gatorbacks that are on it. It' looks like the Gmax have 3 distinct tread bars in the middle of the tire, as opposed to the comp 2's that have just one distinct center tread bar. This leans me toward the Gmax's...

Has anyone had any road noise complaints with either the comp-2's or the Gmax's?

Original gatorback tire below for comparison along with the comp2 and gmax. Gmax tread is better match's than comp-2's correct?

Re: BFG comp 2’s VS General Gmax RS?

FWIW, I have the General GMax and have been pretty happy with them; decent traction/noise/response. I haven't had the BFG Comp 2's, though I did run the BFG Comp all-season and wasn't thrilled with the look, so I traded them off for the Generals.

Re: BFG comp 2’s VS General Gmax RS?

Has anyone heard any "official" word about the BFG's? ....the 88 I bought has some old no name brand tires, and I figured I'd just get new wheels and tires at some point. Think I may keep it on the stock 16's for awhile, but just hadn't got around to getting new tires yet. I may call around today and see what I can find.

**Update** - So I called my guy I've been getting tires from for years now, and he said that with the "uncommon" sizes, he's seeing lots of this sorta thing. Produce for 6 months, out of production for 6 months. He couldn't say anything specific about the BFG, but he wasn't surprised. He expects it won't be long before they're available. He said he was gonna call his BFG rep and see if he could get some specifics. For what it's worth, he said the General G Max is the only tire available in 245-50-16 that's approved for use on NC Highway Patrol cars. -for whatever that IS or ISN'T worth.

Re: BFG comp 2’s VS General Gmax RS?

If we can agree BOTH the BFG and the General are good quality tires, it really comes down to looks. (and availability, LOL). ...and for me, the sidewall of the General, with that textured diagonal pattern in those few sections kills it for me. Always look either cleaner or dirtier, shinier or duller than the rest of the tire. Pain to clean. Pain to dress. Ugh, I can't do those!

Soooo update on the BFGs. My guy called his rep, and "they" say

"they're NOT currently scheduled to be back into production at any time, but that they also weren't listed as discontinued. On the record that means anything is possible. Back in production next week......or never again. They just don't know. ....but given that it's an odd size, don't hold your breath."

I hate to hear that.

My BFG Comp 2s are getting long in the tooth...this is not good. Looks like I will be looking at the Generals when it comes time to replace but at least most guys seem to like them. I would love a repro Gatorback but not holding my breath. Its getting harder and harder to keep the 16s going...

Re: BFG comp 2’s VS General Gmax RS?

I searched here but can't find the reference to the Continental tire that's been released in the 245/50/16 format.
Or am I imagining the whole thing? This was pre-pre-pandemic so who knows at this point?

It may have been the 245/45/17 for the new Hawks IROC wheel I'm thinking of.

I would LOVE a Continental in 245/50/16, but I haven't heard anything suggesting it being available.

Re: BFG comp 2’s VS General Gmax RS?

Demand for that size hss probably dropped to the point where it's not worth it to BFG anymore. Their parent, Michelin, quit that size long ago. Doubtful, but maybe now that inventory is depleted, they'll eventually do a run of 245/50-r16s. Since the demand is low, perhaps they're just not in regular production.

Still a lot of 3rd gens and C4s around that need that size. But the choices will only become more limited. Shame, I have BFGs on my car. Great tire.

Continental is the parent of General, so maybe the G-Max covers this size for them.
