Desperately need wheel lock key off.
Desperately need wheel lock key off.
I’m literally begging at this point for someone to have this wheel lock key. I will buy it. I need it to desperately get these wheels off. The previous owner never cared to know where he put it. Apparently he put it in the car everytime he was done with it but I’ve looked literally all over the car. Nothing. And he replaced the caliper on the driver side so he has taken the wheels off before with said key. But I have looked online. Nothing. I desperately need help.

If you can't find the key, I'd weld a large nut on to it. I'd you use a large nut you can weld the lug to the inside of the nut. Just don't weld to the wheel stud!

Lug nut doesn't look factory, so it's doubtful you'll ever find out what it is, which means you'll probably have to use a clever or forceful method to remove it.
Potential hiding places:
Wheel looks like an 84 to 87-ish Trans Am/Formula wheel. If the car is too, then those years had map/magazine pouches on the backsides of the front seats; kept mine there. GTA seats have nets.
Console.
Rear locking storage compartment.
Rear storage well.
Spare tire compartment (involves changing a tire, so makes sense).
Underneath the seats.
Map/sunglasses pouch on the front of the dash, passenger side.
Some GTA door panels have map pockets on them.
I believe standard door panels had map pockets on them.
Is there a compartment large enough for it in an overhead console, if you have one?

Pound a 12 point socket onto the lock, rip it off w/an impact gun. Fast/easy/works.

Re: Desperately need wheel lock key off.
I lost my McGard key a few years ago. I emailed them and they asked me to take a picture, face on, of the lock and email it to them. They matched it to a key and I purchased it. Problem solved. You could also hammer a 12-point socket on it to get the lock off, as another member said. Another, more expensive option, is to buy a "Twist Socket Set". The twist socket is designed to cut into the od of a nut or lock and cut deeper as you try to loosen, preferably with an impact wrench.

Your other thread for this same issue had a couple good suggestions, including one from me to search Ebay. Personally I would do some of the above suggestions instead, but if you insist on avoiding those then here, I did it for you (yours looks like "G", about $17 for the set free shipping).

Most tire shops have a set of master keys and can take it off without any trouble.

Time to man up, pick a method out of the 5 suggested methods, and get it done......

I take back my suggestion. I feel like hysterical people shouldn't be trusted w welders. Or maybe they should be given welders and a good project to work on. Either way, there are some good options prior to busting out a welder.
if you do weld a nut on, just mask the wheel off and but some non flammable grease/Vaseline on the wheel to protect the finish from spatter.

Re: Desperately need wheel lock key off.
I agree with orangebird. removing four locking lugs without the key is so tiny and minuscule compared to all the other problems you could possibly have with mechanical things. I've hammered a regular 12 point socket onto them and removed them with ease, only to find the key 2 weeks later of course.

Stop talking like a hysterical old lady and actually READ the posts in this thread!

Re: Desperately need wheel lock key off.
Just remember, these cars have now been around for 43 years (1982 to 2025) and there are no mechanical failures/maintenance issues that haven't been seen and solved over and over. No matter what issue it is, there are at least one, if not several to several dozen, possible solutions and none of this is worth getting frustrated about.
Oh, and lastly, one old guy's opinion of those wheel locks;
The only people those keep from removing the wheels is the owner! If a thief really wants your wheels, they're GONNA get them, and I've never not once allowed them to be on any of my cars.

Re: Desperately need wheel lock key off.
Get a small chisel and a hammer. Hit it with the chisel pointed in the direction to unscrew the oddball nut. Couple whacks and you should be able to turn it with your fingers. Then get a standard lug nut and put that mess in the garbage.
