Need serpentine belt info...

I owe this post to Doward. In thread 173492, the last pic he took of the re-routed belt to bypass the smog pump is useful.I had only a 60" nylon type tape measure.I took one end of the tape measure and affixed it to the alternator.I then routed it as much as possible and ended up at the top of the crank pulley.I marked that spot with a highlighter.I then measured the rest of the way back to the alternator without the smog pump in the loop.I came up with a measurement of 93".NOW, the hard part.I need to find a belt that length.I called AZ and Advance and they always ask for the make and model car.I tell them I'm bypassing the pump and they get lost.Would the belt for a 86 or so 2.8 V6 equipped without a smog pump from the factory work on my 91 3.1 V6?Is the enignes pretty much the same?

OOps...I forgot one thing. The idler pulley was all the way down.Instead of a 93" I might need a 91" or so to let the idler do its job and keep tension on the belt.I did'nt take into account the length need for the idler.

No to the '86-'89 belt. They have an idler that takes up some belt-slack (so to speak).

Tell you what, I have to go feed the cat and while I'm in the garage I'll check the belt length.. . . .

OK, cat is happy, and the belt size is: K060915. That is a Gates Micro-V belt number.

That belt fits when the AIR pump is removed and nothing is used for an idler. This isn't really the best way to go as the long unsupported belt length from the alternator down to the crank will slap and vibrate.

I much prefer to get an idler from a '86-'89 engine, and bolt that on. Then it is a matter of a stock replacement belt too (K060930).

My car STOCK ran that same configuration in Dowards picture. I have an '87 and they came from the factory with no smog pump this year and is routed this way from the factory with a 91.5" belt with the factory crank pulley size.

If you go to an ASP power crank pulley, then you'll have to reduce the belt length to 89.5"

I currently run an 88.2" belt with an ASP pulley and a V8 140amp alt with a custom bracket- however, my car is still routed with the same confuiguration leading directly from the crank pulley to the alt.
Goodyear belt # 4060915 (Best belt you can buy)

I'm going to highjack this thread and ask another question on something I'm working on- Maybe someone can help me? DOes the 3.1 motors or even the 3.4 4th gen motors have the same steering pump bracket that bolts to and covers the waterpump (Bracket circled in red)? I need clearance straight into the right waterpump block port for what I'm trying.

OK...I got it now.I went to Advance and got a 91.5" belt(915K6).I did'nt think it was going to go on cause it was tight.I thought I was going to wring the idler pulley's nut trying to get the tension off the belt.It finally went on and worked fine after I cranked the car to make sure.I think I might have to re-adjust the timing or at least check it to see if any change. Thanks for the help guys. Its good to post stuff in here.

ken3983: Yes, at first they are tight. I was surprised at how tight the new ones are, and then how quickly they stretch out some.

vsixtoy: I checked a '92 and it looks just like yours. P/S bracket attaches to and covers the drivers side of the pump.

vsixtoy, 85-86 p/s brackets didn't cover the pump. I don't have to remove it to take my water pump off. You might have a problem with the a/c though; my p/s pump bracket bolts to the a/c bracket for the pivot bolt and frontmost adjusting bolt. Can you just take a hole saw to your current bracket?

Mark_Fbird85, what about a Gates K040525? From http://www.expressautoparts.com , that shows as a "Belt, V-ribbed, Water Pump, Alternator, and Air Pump".
