If I have a trans with a mechanincal vss cable, will the electronic VSS slide in or will I need a differnt tailshaft housing?

I guess I should re-phrase that. Will the Electronic VSS for a T5 fit on an older tranny that has a cable-driven VSS?

If both tranny's are T-5's they will swap. The sleeve where the cable screws onto comes out and the new VSS goes in. Just yank the little shaft off the small mechanical speedo gear and put it on your VSS.

So the electronic sender is the same size as the cable driven one? The reason I ask is because the only electronic ones I'm farmiliar with are larger diameter ones like in the 700R that definitely wont fit into the t5

Axle/Gears: ones that turn.
You'll need to get one to fit the T5, along with the proper driven gear for the speedo.
For your other question concerning a flywheel, you'll need one to fit the engine in the car; if it's the stock engine, you need one for a one-piece rear seal.

Correct, the electronic VSS fits into the same hole where the mechanical speed pickup is.
And correct, the T-5 VSS is different from automatics (don't ask me why), it's smaller and much pricier. The part # is 10456087.
If you tell me what gears you got in the back, I can also post part #'s for the drive and driven gears for the VSS.
Hope this helps.

For 3.42's, you will need these VSS gears:
drive gear: PURPLE - 7 teeth - part # 14071731
driven gear: WHITE - 19 teeth - part #14090592
Hope this helps.
Lou
P.S.: Don't be surprised if you have to pay $25 for the driven gear, GM is milking it as much as they can.

For an auto or manual? Cuz your signature says 700r4 but then you're asking for a T5 VSS. So I'm not sure.
Well, for 700r4, you'd need the 17/44 combination, as my book says:
drive gear - 17 teeth - red - #8640517
driven gear - 44 teeth - dk grey - #25513051
For T5, it's a small problem, there's no gear combination for 3.27's. The closest thing is the 9/22 combo for 3.08's:
drive gear - 9 teeth - red - #14053347
drivern gear - 22 teeth - grey - #14090595
The T5 VSS can be found at Advance Autoparts with no problems. Just make sure it's the "skinny" one, not the fat one (for auto's).
Hope this helps.

The T-5 trannys have VSS gears only for the following rear end gearing (as specified by GM):
2.73
3.08
3.42
4.10
The 3.08's would be the closest, with a 5% error. Meaning that at 60mph, the speedometer would be 3 mph off.
Sorry, that's the best we can do.

Ok, I dont mean to hijack any thread but, I got my car with the speedo not doing anything.
This is basically what the person did to the car, It was a V6 Automatic and not sure of the gears, they arent the same as they are now.
Now it has a 350 and a T5 from an 84 (the 350 isnt I know) The rear end is a 3.73 posi.
From what I have read from numerous threads I am more confused then when I didnt read any in the first place, could someone please start off easy for me.
I understand this is going to take work to get going but I feel that this is more of a safety thing for the car rather then a "want"
It seems that you guys know what you are doing, can someone please write something up like a "how to" on something like this.
Thanks
Dennis

Perhaps a search on this board will get you that info.

My situation is the contrapositive: I want to swap my 700's electronic VSS to a mechanical VSS.
If I'm reading this correctly, it seems that I need to remove the innards of the electronic unit and insert the shaft/gear combo from a cable drive unit???
I tried to throw in the entire mechanical unit into the tailshaft of in place of the electronic unit, but that didn't work. Is a tailshaft swap in order?
