Anyone ever used sand paper to shine up the parking lights?

For those that don't know..

Parking lights = orange lights on the front of the car.

I have some that I'm going to put up on ebay. They have the typical nasty fogged over look.

I am thinking about using sandpaper on them in the same fashion you would to polish a plenum. Start with a low grit paper and work my way up to 2000, then buff them up with some plastic polish.

Anyone ever done this before with good results?

Or any other ways to do this would be appreciated. If all goes well I may try it on the tail lights too.

I've done some six sets like that.. Works beautifully.

I used Eastwood's Plastic Polish.

I used some polishing compount and a hight speed buffer wheel, look brand new, now I just need to get them on the car.

Took less than 10min total for both lights.

Cool, figured it would work well. I guess tomorrow on my way to AutoZone for some stuff I'll swing by walmart and grab some sand paper, plastic polish, and some pads for my buffer.

If all goes well I guess I'll do some work on my 85's lights. Well.. just one of them... one looks brand new while the other looks original. Some people need to learn that some stuff should be replaced in pairs...heh.

Heres what I did to mine. Flushed them with greased lightning and buffed the outside. Big Difference! As you can see, the clean one was not totally dry when the pic was taken.

I wouldn't start too low, maybe 1000 grit. I'd even try just the polish first to see if it would do the job without sanding.

Well, I just finished one.

I started with 800 grit sand paper(walmart was out of 1000 grit). Then used 1500, then 2000. Wet sanded with each grit for 5-10 minutes.

After that I washed the outside really well and flushed the inside with water and simple green.

Last I used some Brasso on them. Its a metal polish my parents swear by. It also works great on plastic.

Now the lights lens is as smooth as glass and damn near crystal clear.
