Hatch Light Question
When I bought my car it was in bad shape, and it had no light for the hatch. I found a light fixture and bulb but I'm not sure how to safety wire it up. It has a white wire and an orange wire. I'm also replacing the hatch motor assembly. So maybe I could wire it up then. Will the light come one only when the hatch is open? What about when the doors are open or the interior light is turned manually?
I have one more question also. Where is a safe place to ground an amp in the rear of the car? I only have about 3-4 feet of wire. The amp will be placed on the "hump" somewhere. Thanks-

I know that the 1988 and earlier hatch lights have a manual switch to turn them on/off. My 1990 is turned on/off by the hatch pull-down unit. I don't have a Camaro or Firebird Service Manual for 1989 (aka HELMS manual). I'll describe how to wire it for the pull-down motor to power it. There is a red with white stripe wire that is +12v. It connects to one side of the hatch lamp. The other side connects to a black with orange stripe wire from the hatch pull-down motor.
You SHOULD buy a 1989 Camaro Service Manual either from your dealer or online at www.helminc.com.

I forgot to add that the black with orange stripe wire connects to a white wire with a small black connector on it coming from the pull-down motor wiring.

Oh I will make sure everything is good and secure. I'm just not sure where I can ground my amp to. As you can see I'm no electrician.

right underneath the hatch motor, there are a couple of brackets, drill through one of those, and put a bolt and nut on it, make sure its tight

I think it is really thoughtful of you to make it easier for a thief to pop the hatch and see the nice amplifier he's stealing. It will save him the trouble of having to bring his own flashlight.
