carb acting goofy need help please

well i just got my car back from a cam swap. the idle will go real high and wont come down unless you repeatedly pop the pedal. also there doesnt seem to be much power increase from before the cam swap. when you are in the engine bay and pull the throttle all the way back real quick it makes a gurgling sound then goes. it hesitates off idle. the guy at the shop said he sprayed carb cleaner everywhere and couldnt find a leak. he said the vacuum guage was jumping all over the place which means a leak in the carb. im at a loss here. the car ran fine before. now it runs like ****. he said i should get a 650 dp holley and see if that fixes the problem. he also said that maybe with the bigger cam i didnt have enough carb for it and the 600 might be choking it. can someone help me? any problems similar to this? also what side of the carb is the vacuum line from the distributor supposed to go to? i pulled both lines off and nothing seems to happen, so im guessing theres a major vacuum leak somewhere. any tests i can do? thanks for your help.

Check your valve adjustment. Jumping vacuum is not a vacuum leak or too small carb, more likely an intake valve leak.

And, 600 is NOT too small for a 305 in any case.

update: i found a small crack/cut in the hose that goes from the manifold to the power brake diaphram thing. could this be a big enough vacuum leak to cause my problems??

could my carb have developed a vacuum leak? it ran fine before. i also noticed a few drips of some orange looking brown **** coming out of where the fuel line goes into the inline filter. what the hell is that. i need to borrow somebodys carb to see if that was the problem. anyone in the east dallas area want to help a brother out?

As far as carb size, I have a 390 Holley on a AMC 360 .060 over. It runs great (Grand Wagoneer). I have a 600, just never bothered to try it out. Lazy. And if it's not broke...

did you replace the line from the manifold to the booster, if that is leaking it will definitly cause a major problem. a 600 carb is actually a little large for a 305, but if it ran before , ....it should run now.
