has anyone come up with a way to set up functional ram air on a carb engine? all the air boxes I see are listed as "for speed density TPI cars only"

would it be effective enough to be useful?

 

It seems to me like a ram air hood doesn't do muich ramming, really.. just gets cold air into the intake. That being said, I don't see why a ram air hood/cowl induction hood with an open element air filter wouldn't have the same basic effect.

But if you really want one.. Make one. I can't remember who on the boards has it, but basically, it's a ram air hood with a throttle body injection system. The base of the air cleaner is a lot bigger and extends all the way to the front of the engine, and seals against the hood.

 

Does it rain where you live? Then you don't want to be rigging something with a hole in the hood.

The factory designed an excellent "ram air" (there's really no such thing at highway speeds, it's just a marketing gimmick, what you really want is "cold air) system. It came on the L69 Z28s. I picks up cold outside air from above the headlights.

That calls itself a "ram air box"; but it draws in hot underhood air. It would be a distant second choice to the L69 setup, in terms of effectiveness. It's better than some designs but far from the best.

 

You're supposed to connect some 4" flex hose to duct cold air from the front, not leave it open to pull in hot air under the hood. Provided you have the space to route the hose it should out flow any factory system.

 

That would be better; their pics on their site show K&N cone filters mounted on the ends of the snorkels above and just outboard of the valve covers.

Yes. T/As were available with the L69, in the same years. I've never seen one with a dual snorkel but somebody says that their 85 had it, I've only seen 83s and 84s that I can remember. Like most of the better air intake systems, the Camaro HO air cleaner won't fit under the anti-performance hoods of most Firebirds.

 

What kinda hood you got? Factory ram air for the "turbo bulge" (82-84 t/a & formula) came on both the crossfire and l69 t/as in 82-84. Might be kinda hard to get ahold of though...

 

at the moment I have the flat base 'bird hood :lala:

 

Fits under my stock T/A hood fine.

Oh, and in the picture, there is really no carb under it but their is now. I also have a non ac heater box instead of a gaping hole on the firewall now too.

Actually, the bulge hood was on the 82-82 Crossfire cars, mid 82-84 LG4 cars, and late 83-84 L69 cars. For 85, the Trans Am had the dual snorkel air cleaner. For the 83-84 L69 cars, they used the same single snorkel air cleaner as the 82-84 LG4. Both used the functional air induction assembly on the hood. The hood was brought back in 87 for use on the Formula cars and was used till 92....the only difference being a block-off plate instead of a screen and induction assembly.
