A set of headers just for me?

So I've been skimming the exhaust forum for a while... and I was wondering what a good pair of headers would be for my application on a 92 auto. I want a 3" collector with y-pipe. I was looking into these chrome (yes I know chrome discolors) Edelbrocks on summit (pn EDL-68721) for $350. I was wondering if that's a decent price to pay for a pair of headers and y-pipe. I plan to eventually cut the cat out and run a straight pipe anyway. I don't need AIR fittings, but I do need an O2 bung. Looked on ebay but only found some heddmans with no y-pipe. I think I'd prefer shorties just because they're that much easier to install (correct me if im wrong).

Basically I'm just looking for:
- an O2 bung
- a 3" collector
- a 3" y-pipe

Name brands don't mean much to me, and 1 5/8 vs 1 3/4 doesn't matter very much in my application. Thanks for all the help.

Another vote for the hooker 2055s for almost the same price as the edelbrocks!

Everything you said, except they are not available without air. You have to cut the tubes off and weld them shut.

You can get the hedmans, there 200 bucks flat with the h pipe, and then you can get just paid to get them ceramic coted. I use these with my car, and I have a 3 inch flowmaster catback (with no cat) with a dualoutlet flowmaster looks and sounds great, but im choosing to get rid of this setup, because in the long run, you ll realize full length headers are much much better, but if you choose to go this route, and want a great catback for a great price give me a shout.

The edelbrock headers are really nickel/zinc plated. We have them on our 90 after the hooker y-pipe rusted through.

I still have the headers to put on my 82 though, just need a y-pipe.

UPDATE ON THREAD

So I finally got around to ordering my 2055s yesterday, and they arrived very next day from Summit Racing. Total was around $370 shipped. I bought a can of header paint to prevent them from rusting and have since sprayed them.

$179+$15 per ft in the Y pipe+s&h back for coated headers + y-pipe.

Rodacker, I've got that same carpet.

Total cost was $253.40 with a $38.40 discount because I heard about it on 3rdGen.

If I had it to do over again, I would have order the 2055's through Jet-Hot for $604.00. I think I would have been money ahead after shipping.

It's a nice carpet but it sure shows the dog hair.

With Hooker Super Competition headers, the objective has always been to make the maximum horsepower possible and put it at the optimum point in the power curve. This set of headers is tuned with equal length primary tubes to create an optimum pressure between the intake and exhaust system. Premium exhaust gaskets and new mounting bolts are also included.

Sold as a pair.
I did not recieve gaskets nor mounting bolts so I called Summit's customer service.
the guy goes "well Hooker products don't come with bolts or gaskets"
I read him this paragraph twice and he still didn't offer to send me some gaskets or bolts.
I should have stuck with JEGS.

I am going thru this same ordeal. I got my 2055s from Summit on Friday. Ordered them weds night. Great service.
My Hooker box had all the bolts and gaskets right in with the parts. Sounds like Token got screwed.

I am doing some welding on my parts before they go out to Jet Hot.

Rodacker, how long did it take to get them coated? At least I got the same price you all mentioned.

It would be cheaper to order right from JetHot, but if you modify (weld) or do anything to the coatings after you get them, the warranty is no good. In fact I got a quote from JetHot for $545, but they DID mention no bolts or gaskets.

Ceramic Coating is not sprayed on, but the header is dipped in it I believe.

Even with hi temp paint, headers will rust over time. With header paint, your not able to get to the inside of the tubes, so they rust from the inside.

Even if you were, it would still be nowhere as effictive as ceramic coating.

The coating helps retain heat needed for the exhaust gas velocity and helps scavenging....it also reduces heat in an already "warm" underhood enviroment. Get'em coated.....you'll be so glad you did in the long run......JetHot's coatings are warrantied for a lifetime I think. Plus, they look soooo much better than rusted out pipes.....just my .02

The main reasons are to keep the engine area cooler and prolong the life of the headers. Jet-Hot claims a performace boost of 1% to 3%, However, I'm not counting on that.

I got my 2055's from jeggs and they came with bolts and gaskets.
they were also painted silvery gray.

I hope to have the car back in a day or two.

Get them 2055's jet hot coated! I ordered mine directly from jet hot a few months back for 530 shipped. the coating looks really nice and my underhood temp is the same from before havin those headers installed which really amazed me compared to my friends 71 bird who has hedmen non coated. His ride is sweet but overheats pretty damn easily. ahh well i love the hooker headers well worth my money!

contact jet hot and ask them about the warranty. i had a shop put mine in it cost me 300 bucks (ouch!) to get them installed but they did a great job. im sure you can find a cheaper installation price. i woulda done them myself but i have no idea what i would be doin and my friend who installed his headers on his car was out of town durin that time. well worth it though!

Get some plain black ones, have the factory paint sandblasted off and paint them with real header paint.

As long as you use the proper paint and follow the directions, they won't rust and the paint won't burn off. It won't be as "classy" looking as a ceramic coat, but I think flat black ones look tougher anyway. It also won't have a few of the other real advantages, like underhood temp reduction, but you will have a few hundred more bucks in your wallet after and not much, if any, performance difference.

Mine are flat black and are great.

So I've got my headers installed now. It took me probably close to 10 hours to remove the old manifolds and y-pipe, but less than an hour to bolt everything up and re-route the spark plug wires. I don't have a catalytic converter, so I'm dumping at the Y-pipe right now, plus an 18" extension on that... but it doesn't quite reach the catback. I need to run to the muffler shop and have them hook me up. I started the car up for the first time and it almost scared me how loud it was as open headers. I let it run for a little to burn off the penetrating fluid and bake on the silver header paint. The pipes were able to boil my saliva when I spit on them after 30 seconds of run time at idle... that's hotness.

At any case, I'm so glad I got those nasty manifolds out. I now have a full Hooker Supercomp exhaust, from head to tail. You think thats worth around 25-30 hp at the wheels? Maybe my L03 is breaking 200 hp now! I doubt it, but hey lets see!
