gas cap challenge

heh, i think i just thought of the ultimate way to hide your gas cap. i got it from my reply here: https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...65#post1496865

a KICKASS trick i just thought of would be to hinge the rear light, so that you could swing it out of the way, and have the gas cap under there.

however, that sounds like alot of work....

hehe, i JUST thought of that too...

so heres my thoughts on it.

route the inlet tube back to the rear corner. using a cable gas tank release, pull the release for the latch.... this latch undoes the outside part of the light, letting the light swing out on a hinge mounted near the license plate lighting location.... the entire light assembly swings out... the wires would probly have to be lengthened so that they can be put along the hinge line and running up the back of the assembly.

when your done, put the cap back on, and click the lamp "closed"...

you can totally shave the gas cap doing this.. and noone can even find it if they didnt know.... and you arnt pumping gas INSIDE your car.

wachoo think? (other then the fact thats it ALOT of work)

I think that would be a really cool mod, but I don't have the time or skills to do it. Maybe someone will though.

lol, actually, i thougt it up at 4am lastnight/morning lol...

i was thinking, hmm, cant put the filler neck under the plate, the hatch motor and storage area are in teh way... then i thought down by the bumper... but fuel doesnt flow "up" from the pump...

then i thought of my lil gas cap idea..

of course as soon as i tell everyone about it, i hear about how 55 chevys had it...... ive had 5 people tell me 55's did that, 2 people tell me that that was the import rage a few years ago (ive never seen it done on anything) and 3 people that said they thought of it before..

so it isnt a totally orignal idea... the challenge still remains though... will anyone DO IT?

I have a 74 Nova that does that, and I think that putting in the back storage comp would be a better place.

i dont mean to be a butt and I know this isn't the main point on the post but. im pretty sure the 55 has a gas door on the fender. iI know the 57 has it behind the light and i think the 56 has it behind the light also. I think its an awsome idea though and would love to see it done.
and if anybody wants to tell me im wrong i won't take it hard cause i was born in 81 so the number of shoe box chevys that i have seen might be kinda low.
later.

Great idea....

Looking forward to see some progress

You may want to buy a spare taillight and modify that one until you find a hinging mechanism that works properly.....

You are correct...the 55 had a flap on the drivers side quarter panel, though it was a common trick to shave it and relocate the filler inside the trunk. The 56 had a vertical bar built into the taillight that you had to turn to one side, and the whole tailight assembly hinged downward (very cool). The 57 (my first car) has the gas filler under a stainless trim piece over the taillight, in the drivers side fin. It was always fun in high school, going to a full service station (85-88) and confusing the crap out of the attendant! It was worth the extra $$ for the gas to watch!

We would have liked to do a behind the taillight install on Redraif's Firebird, but there is no practical way to do it, since the gas filler neck would have to go over the wheelwell, then down to the taillight (no way to get gas to go up).

If you mounted a fuel cell in the lower hatch well area, it would be easy to route. You could run a NASCAR-style fuel filler setup so no fumes would get in the car. I'm considering a fuel cell on my 87 TA anyway, so I might just go that route. I really like the look of a shaved gas filler, and this to me would be the ultimate version of it. Redraif's system works fine, but you have to be very particular when filling it, and you "ocassionally" get a little fuel smell in the car.

yyea, but i have a vert.. and the only lockable storage in the whole car is my trunk.... putting a fuel cell in there would make the trunk worthless to me..... plus my sub and amps are in there.

i suppose i could be a lil more trick if i did it in the car where my top lays down... cause then i could pull up, pop the tonnu cover and fill the car......( or lift the rear roof and then pop the tonnu cover...

but, i donno.. i think im going to try the trick taillight thing, and see if that works out.
