V6, just died and won't start

I have a 1987 2.8 MPFI Firebird. I was driving on 2 occasions when I hit a bump and the car just died. The first time it satrted back up a week after, but this time it has not started in almost a month. I have replaced the MAF sensor, checked fuel flow ( it is good) and have spark. So why don't I have a running car. Any info will be greatly appreciated.

I have been through the engine compartment and can not find any loose connections. The engine is turning over, but it just will not rin. After it died there was a rumbling noise out the exhaust. Almost like it was back firing, but no bangs , just rumbles. But that has stopped now, all there is, is the engine cranking over but not running. I will check the location of the rotor with piston1 T.D.C. Any other advice will be great. By the way tried pulling codes and all I got was the MAF sensor and I replaced that already.

The spark plugs are clean, the engine is not flooded. the injectors are working.

Well, I cant diagnose your car with the given information, but you say it died after you hit a bump? First thing to do is a thurough inspection of the engine bay to look for compenents and/or connectors that may be loose.

You say your getting fuel, and spark. Im assuming your getting compression as well? Might have knocked something like a coil lead loose. Or maybe your dist gear jumped/snapped a tooth?

Maybe you wired the sparkplugs backwards?

J/K... let us know more.

Also, If it were me i'd bring the #1 cyl to TDC and check the location of the rotor on the dist.

Who knows, you may have just knocked some stupid sensor loose.

Is it Cranking?

IF it isn't turning over, it could be a loose ground. If you have spark and fuel, timing would be the next thing to question (as stated above). We really need more info. Have you tried pulling codes?

Is it flooding itself? Are the plugs sucked in oil or gas?

You say you have fuel flow, but that doesn't mean the injectors are firing... bump + loose connectors or shorted wires.

Does your car have the ol GM VATS? I'll bet that if the other stuff all checks out, then the wire that comes off the key cyclinder in your steeing column burnt apart and just makes contact once in a while.

This is what happened to me. It took me about amonth and a half to figure it out.

It also happened to a buddy of mine who had a 1990 GTA.

The cylinder was redesigned so the wire will not wear out.

Yes, check the VATS if your car is equipped with it. I had the same problem and found it in a day by accident. Damn thing. It's a black box located under the dash and says secure key or something on it. The wires go straight from that box to the steering column. But if that doesn't solve your problem, what is your fuel pressure. I know you said that you check the flow but you didn't say what you fuel pressure is.
