downshift problem

My transmission shifts into all gears while I am upshifting, but downshifting from fourth to third is impossible unless I go back down to second and back up to third. What the crap is going on here?

I have a similar problem with my car - to downshift the car either has to be going really slow, or fast... but at normal speeds it won't downshift....

I was told it may be a bad syncro, but I'm not sure... anyone else have any input?

BTW, mine is also when shifting 4th to 3rd

ditto - I'm so used to downshifting from 4th to 3rd throught 2nd that I find myself doing it in my other car. LOL

So is this a common problem then??? Does it hurt anything driving it like that? I mean, my tranny seems good other than that, so I hate to start ripping it apart if I don't have to.

I don't know how common it is, but it has come up on this board before. Synchros I guess. I plan on driving it like that until something else goes, which is bound to happen eventually, then rebuild.

Matching revs may let you downshift.

I agree that the synchro needs attention.

With mine, 80 km or above (Canadian car) and I can downshift into 3rd... 50 km or below, and I can downshift... matching revs should help... double clutching works sometimes too, but thats just annoying... easier to move the shifter close to 2nd, then into 3rd.

i put a t-5 in my car for about two days before i took it out and put the other back in because it wouldn't downshift from 3rd to 2nd. assuming it's the same thing, mine was the synchro. i was told by my friend who i bought it off said the synchro had either shifted or had some bad teeth on it. so i'd say check your synchro.

Crashing 4th to 3rd, or 3rd to 4th, is the pilot bushing.... the clutch gear (4th) wobbling around too much next to the mainshaft (3rd is on the mainshaft)

Thanks for the tip: do I have to take apart the tranny to get to it? Do you have a pic of it?

No you don't have to take apart the trans; it's really more a part of the clutch.

Here's the roller bearing version of it.

Really???? A shot pilot bushing can cause this? That's good to know... cause I was told by my mechanic that the pilot bushing needs to be replaced on my car cause its bad, but I never realized that the bushing and the shifting problem were related. So that means when I replace the bushing, assuming the synchros are ok, I'll solve 2 problems at once!

BTW, if you have any other suggestions or tips as to replacing the pilot bushing, I'm all ears... thats the next thing I'll be working on once I finish my brakes.

See the crankshaft picture above; it's in the middle of the crank pressed in.

search for pilot bushing cost to see some prices.

wow.......gotta be a common prob then...i have the same exact problem and my clutch just went out too. its got a warranty (the guy that put it in in may obviously didnt do it right) so im gonna
get a new one and do it myself....

getting new:
pressure plate
clutch disc
throwout bearing
clutch and flywheel bolts
and an alignment tool
if i need it a new fork too (but i doubt it)
and i will resurface the flywheel (which he didnt do)

are the pilot bearing and pilot busing the same part??? i know i need that/those to hopefully solve my downshifting problems!

i had bad clutch chatter and it just didnt feel right so finally it just went out and i have a horribly soft clutch pedal and it slips like crazy (pedal has to be all the way out before it moves).

ive researched a lot and pretty much summed up i need new everything. hopefully this will solve the clutch problem i had along with the unsmooth tranny shifting and downshifting problem i have.

any other input or advise...i had taken all the notes i can from searching, my fingers hurt!

o yea, whats the good way to remove the pilot bearing and/or bushing?????

Bushings were commonly used by GM; they're bronze. Now all service replacement parts of those are an actual bearing.
